I got a quote from AA Insurance for my Avenger:
Full Cover Premium = $82
Insured Value = $4000
Excess = $400
Max km's per year = 5000
Named Drivers 25+ only
Have to keep car in garage
Breakdown cover included

A nice low premium, but the km's can't be increased and named drivers is a hassle.

Im with AMI,

3rd party, fire and theft with no excess on glass claims.

about $200 a year and excess is 300 I think.

Have considering getttig full cover but seems to be a hassle to get insurance for daily driven classics (ie without limited km's)

*waits for richard to pop and and say how he gets unlimited Kms with Swann etc etc....lol*

avenga

Haha. Yes I get unlimited Kms with Swann  ;D

I pay $180 per year and it is insured for $4,000 plus it doesn't need to be garaged. excess is $250.

thats dam cheap. might have to look into it.

on another note, some dickhead nearly drove into me the other day, was about to fucking rage at him

avenga

Damn man. I hate newbie drivers. I have had so many close calls with dickheads that don't look before pulling out or tailgate.

damn.

Back to the insurance question. I rung up Swann to clarify and they said they do it on a case by case basis. They said they cannot insure a daily driver as a classic but if you only drive it in the weekends or a few times a week then it is sweet.

Because I work from home I don't drive my Avenger that often so they are cool with insuring it as a classic.

I told them I did 4,500KM in 12 days in my Charger on my South Island trip last year and they were sweet with it.

I had to laugh at the AA's policy...If my car's stolen and I tell them who stole it, I don't have to pay the excess!
What...like I'd know who stole it?!

Got a quote from Swann Insurance:

Full Cover Premium = $248
Insured Value = $3000
Excess = $250 damage, $500 theft
Max km's per year = no limit
Anyone can drive, $650 excess under 25
Windscreen and breakdown cover

avenga

Mine would be cheaper because I insure the Charger with them also so they give me a multivehicle discount.

There breakdown cover is really good. They paid to have my Charger towed back from Hunua which was cost like $250. I just booked my own towie then faxed the invoice to them and they paid me back in to my account the next day.

The AA has breakdown cover too, so I ended up insuring Scarlett with them.
$82 is a bargain for comprehensive insurance, even though the 5000km limit might be a problem later!!

kierbear

haha im with vero and its something like $24 a week and $300 excess and thats thrid party fire theft and glass and it actually took me weeks to sort that out since im under 25. might give this swann shit a go. i was only allowed car insurance coz i took out contents at the same time :/ oh and its not allowed to be modified lol

thats like 1000 a year! what a rip. just checked mine the other day, its 150 a year with AMI, 3rd party fire and theft etc and 300 excess.

avenga

Yeah $1000 a year is a rip off but I remember insurance being super expensive for me before I turned 25.

Sucks really because young people are the people who can't afford insurance in the first place. I think they should make it like UK and other places where it is illegal to drive a car without insurance. Then everyone is covered and it also makes insurance cheaper because more people have it and more competition pushs the price down, and also hopefully then the government would step in and force them to make it cheaper for young people. It is also a way to crack down on high powered cars in the hands of young people by making the insurance for boy racer cars unaffordable while keeping a normal cars insurance cheap.

The problem with compulsory insurance, is that insurance companies are forced to insure people they'd rather not insure, like drunk drivers, drugged drivers, bad drivers, hoons, car thieves, convicted criminals, etc. forcing the premiums in Aussie and the UK sky high.
As they can refuse to insure those people here, that keeps the premiums much lower in NZ.
Competition between insurance companies to lower premiums, only works when they're competing for customers who are low risk, like over 25's with a clean record. From the high premiums charged for under 25's, it's obvious the insurance companies view those people as high risk and there's no competition between the companies to lower their premiums and excesses.
Government policy does affect premiums and the lowering of the drinking age from 20 to 18 in 1999 meant that many more teenagers were drinking, driving and crashing, pushing up insurance premiums as a result.
A way to make insurance cheaper for under 25's who aren't boy racers, is to base the premium on the power of the car and the record of the driver.
