I have been talking to quite a few members about the different wheels and tyres they run on their Avengers and they range massively from stock all the way to the massive rubber on Kiera's Avenger.
I thought it would be a good idea for members to list what size wheels and tyres they run and if they had to roll the guards or not. And also what brand you recommend.
I will start.
My '75 Hillman Avenger
185/70/R13 Goodyear GT3 on 6J Tridents all round. They just fit with out rolling but the front tyres just rub at full lock. The GT3's are a good tyre with plenty of grip.
My '80 Chrysler Avenger
205/60/R13 on 7J hotwires all round. The back guards had to be rolled and the front rub at full lock. I use a combination of semi race tyres, tons of grip once they warm up.
Good Idea Richard!
My Burgundy 1974 1600 Avenger had 155/80-13's on the front and 165/80-13's on the rear, using standard 4.5J rims.
The handling was a bit dicey on smaller tyres, so I've now upgraded it to 165/80-13's on the front (from the rear) and 175/80-13's on the rear - using two 5J Alpine rims.
Handles much better and the effective diff ratio has been reduced to around 3.70:1 from 3.89:1 using the 610mm diameter 175/80 tyres rather than the 594mm Diameter 165/80 or 578mm diameter 155/80 tyres.
If anyone wants to fit the 175/80-13 tyres, use 5J rims (Cortina rims are okay if you can't find Alpine ones) and make sure you get 4 ply car ones, not 8 ply light truck ones...which will cause your car to slide out!!
I got my 4 ply 175/80-13 GT Champiro's from Mag and Tyre Direct in Penrose for $129 each fiited.
I also have a set of 14" 7J Globes with 185 and 195 tyres on them...look mean...but they need the rear guards rolled to fit.
I currently run 165/80s on the standard 4.5" rims. will be running 185/60s on my 13x6" rims. 99% sure I wont run into rubbing issues, but will report back.
Last time I bought new tires was when it had a wof last - bout 97/96?
they were 185's then and not long ago last year managed to wear them into slicks from metal pit bashing :P
14 x7 at the front, with 165/70/r14's and 14 x 8's on the back with 175/70/r14's
dodgy guard rolling at the back lol
shit, I thought you had 7's all around. 8s are where its at haha. I think you should flag panel and paint and get smaller tyres (less profile) and more slam =D.
/random non thread related talk
Crap 14x8? That's huge, that's what I run all round on my Charger! Although I run 245/60/R14's on the back and 215/60/R14 front.
yeah, couldnt u c the dodgy welding/widening? lol. yeah i decided that b4 i get a panel and paint, ill put a new egine in it, if i should come into some more money..maybe i should start buying lotto tickets
more slam is tempting also
My Chrysler Avenger 1980 is running 6 inch cheviot mags with 205 60 13's all around, with extensive guard rolling in the rear (may still need to flare) and bit of clearing in the front.... does not rub at full lock.
when I had play with 17" mags 215's worked better on the front & as above rubbed on rears, 205's worked fine
was mix of 45/40 series tires
Standard 5" rims and hubcaps, 185/60/13 Toyo Proxes RA1. no rolled guards or rubbing.
Positives: noticeably improved steering response, tremendous grip without the need for wider rims and wider tyres increasing unsprung weight.
Negatives: more road noise.
Other things I noticed is increased vibration, I dont think it is the tyres or rims causing it but rather they are highlighting other things that need sorting, the main one I suspect is drive shaft vibration?
