Title: Missing on #2 cylinder
Post by: Redassassin on November 09, 2016, 04:48:42 PM
So we've now done the head gasket, checked the pistons, valves etc. and everything is fine, It seem's to be running a little better now than it did before since we have the car back together but now it doesn't seem to be firing on Cylinder #2... We've replaced the HT lead on that Cylinder, replaced the spark plug, its a brand new rotor and cap on the distributor, did a compression test and its got good compression, reset the tappets. I'm just not sure on what else to look for, I'm stumped. The other 3 cylinders seem to be fine, but with this one, removing the lead makes no difference in the running whatsoever and its definitely missing... :(

is it getting spark at the plug on the end of the lead? like out of the hole

All the cylinders have spark, I just used the air compressor on the idle and primary jets on the carb today and it made no difference. I've attached a video it running, its got us stumped. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLpmIzXD6gQ&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLpmIzXD6gQ&feature=youtu.be)

try spraying WD40 around the inlet manifold it could be leaking, the WD40 might temporally seal any leak, maybe lay a straight edge across the manifold? or use sealant?

+1 On checking for leaks on the intake, can also spray some engine start around the gasket and the revs will increase if its leaking

Just had another go at it after work today, definitely not an intake manifold leak. What's really weird though is that I was demonstrating the problem to my friend, the missing seems to have jumped to the number 3 cylinder? Then we turned the car off and started it again, neither removing 2 or 3 made much of difference to the running of the car? It did make a difference but not as much as you would expect and nowhere as much as removing number 1. My step dad thinks that one of the barrels on the carb has crapped out but this kind of seems more like a distributor issue to me?

Have you checked the points and condensor in the dizzy?

aka electrickery, can you try another Dizzy? I have no idea how they can go wrong But they are serviceable going by the sales brochures of the time (every 10,000 km's apparently)

Partially stripped the carb and cleaned the crap out of it, running it again it is now firing on all 4 cylinders, but still running like crap and backfiring, the barrel for cylinder number 2/3 was spitting back black liquid, I thought it was oil until I smelled it and it was definitely petrol, so it seems the problem is definitely with the carb... should I just organise to buy a stromberg/twin stromberg manifold off someone and cut my losses? I've already spent a fair bit of money on this carb

hi if the manifold leaks the engine will seem to idle to fast motor will kind of drift back to an idle try new gasket ron151
