Title: Mysterious Ticking Noise
Post by: biltong_nz on October 05, 2016, 01:31:46 PM
This mysterious ticking noise recently started and I'm baffled by it. It doesn't sound like valves as the noise is louder lower down and to the right side of the engine. Theres already some tappet noise, and this noise sounds like it's coming from a different area. Noise of ticking does change when rpm changes.

my speakers are shit here but I'd hate to guess Big End bearing?

or Fuel pump, actually this could be your issue, they do wear out & I carry a spare just in case

Hope it's not the big end bearing. It doesn't sound as if it's coming from the block at all so I don't think it will be. Won't be fuel pump either as that's on the other side. From memory, it happened earlier in the year too, but went away after a few days (weird) so I didn't think anything of it.

On a side note, this could be related, but there is also this weird like tapping feel on the vacuum valve into the brake booster. It's hard to explain but it feels like a tap in tune with the audible ticking.

Could be a valve if you can feel it through the brakes as it would change your vacuum. My first guess was the fuel pump or water pump at first.

Very weird. Might have to get that valve cover off tomorrow and see if that sheds any light :(

The mystery continues. Definitely not valve related, stethoscope confirmed that. However I have a pretty nasty exhaust leak from the gasket after the headers? You know the one. So I'll need a new one of those gaskets. Anyone know who stocks them? Still no closer to the mysterious ticking noise though

Bowden engine spares or Graeme Ekins for the gasket. If it's twin valve spring the inner or outer  Could be broken. I've had that happen before. Loose tappet screw maybe? Or if you're 100% sure it's not in the head I'd inspect the fuel pump or timing chain. Just a few guesses from me.

It is no more  8)

The new gasket I got from Graeme was the fix. So my theory is that the old gasket was loose and it was flapping which made the tick sound. Weird anyway. Also discovered that the old gasket was a bit too big, but that's just what came with the car. Photos below... maybe.

Good to hear. Can be quite easy to over look the simple things sometimes aye.

Yeah definitely. I was scared it was something more serious! But gladly it wasn't. Back to good old motoring now  8)
