Title: MSD
Post by: streetracer75 on June 14, 2014, 08:23:23 PM
Hi I see a few of you on here are running MSD ignition kits on your Avengers. I don't know much about these so apologies if these are dumb questions, but is a MSD unit an alternative to electronic ignition or is it something that you fit in addition to electronic ignition?

Also what can I expect in the way of performance improvement fitting a MSD kit? I see them for sale but they seem quite expensive.

Thanks

MSD is a fancy electronic ignition box (separate from the dizzy) that's great if you need to get every last bit of power out of your motor.
Expensive though, I replaced my dizzy points and condensor with a cheap electronic kit and sports coil that works fine...easier starting and no more spluttering on cold mornings!
I would say the performance difference between points ignition and an electronic kit is greater than between an electronic kit and an MSD.
I advise putting an electronic kit and 12V sports coil in first and if you want higher performance later, add an MSD box, as they can all work together.

Ok thanks for that. I have always fitted Flame Thrower electronic ignition kits on all my cars, but I kept reading about these MSD kits and wondered what the deal was.

Based on what you say I think I will just stick to the Flame Thrower set up. (They can supply an uprated coil as part of the kit).

Just so I am clear though, if I fitted an MSD kit sometime later then would it work with the flame thrower set-up or replace it?

Thanks.

Yes your flame thrower electronic ignition would work with the MSD unit.
