Title: Wanted: lowering springs
Post by: blekkja on September 23, 2013, 11:58:58 PM
Fuck it. Anybody sitting on any of these that they want to let go of? The usual 30mm is fine, I guess, but I kinda want to go even lower this time.

While I'm at it: I'm pretty sure my guards will be fine, I won't need to do anything drastic with front 165 / rear 185?

I used to run 185 all round and I was sweet.

I got my springs made by cobra springs. http://cobrasprings.co.nz/ (http://cobrasprings.co.nz/)

Roughly how much are we talking about from Cobra? They only had standard Hunter in stock, so that means custom. I am a poor student at the moment. :)

I think it was about $200 for a pair.

That's not too bad, actually. Does it depend on what height you want it? I really only need the front ones custom made, right, cos I'm sure you could fit any old thing in the rear.

I got them to custom make my rears. I don't think it really makes much difference in price for what height you want.

Another option and a cheap option for a poor student is to hunt down some Avenger Heavy Duty springs.I paid $20 for the rear pair and $15 for the front pair, I found mine on a Chrysler Avenger wagon.
I think your best bet would be to check out the wagon models as they sometimes were fitted (but not always) to them to enable the wagons to carry a heavier load....they are also stiffer than the standard springs.
The free length difference between the front standard and heavy duty springs is about 30 mm lower for the heavy duty springs. The front of my car sits a little bit lower because of this, the rear appears to be about the same. I did not bother to measure the difference.
So you can see you win two ways by gaining stiffer and slightly lower front springs for only $15. and stiffer rear springs for only $20
If you want to lower the car more you will have captive problems as I found the Left front required only about an inch of compression to fit them. the springs had not sagged as they were still about what the manual says they should be.
What you are looking for is the Heavy duty right spring wire diameter is 12.3 mm or 7 coils.
The standard spring wire diameter is 11.5 mm or 7.6 coils
Here are the specs.
Standard Front        80 lb/in, Rear 180 lb/ln.
Heavy Duty Front   100 lb/in, Rear 210 lb/in.
