Thanks for the latest update. It reminds me of my old days of racing.

I think pretty much every time I ended up breaking something by the last run. I say if your car isn't broken by the end of the day then your not trying hard enough.

It will be good to see the improvements you get out of the new motor. It must be pretty well balanced and have a good set of valve springs to pull 10K RPM. My race car engine could pull just over 9K before it would get valve bounce.

Keep up the good work and can't wait to see you race in person at the old school nats.

according to the guy joker got the motor from, it has spent its life as a rally/race motor and was built up to pull 12500rpm.its been rebuilt a few times and before it went bottom up recently he would sit it on 10k.

cant wait to see it running

Who did you get to do the cam grind? What are the cam specs?

I got Kelford cams to do my cam grind. They charged $202 inc

It is a Kelford Cams F29 grind. From what I have read it is low end race spec. I don't know if your head would be big enough for it and it is more suited for dual webers/dellortos but could be worth a shot for $100. I use a custom made F63-7 Kelford cam in my road car.

These are some F29 specs I pulled off the net, they are from a toyota cam but I am pretty sure the F29 profile is the same over all car makes.

haha, I misread it as cam grind, I forgot you brought that cam off trademe. That should be pretty good for your new engine.

I didn't need a crank grind on mine but I did get it polished which cost $90, shiny engine internals FTW!!

What carbs are you going to run on it?

see eoi thread - twin strombergs balanced/knife edged and matched to the head apparently

will stick with them

stil have Twin Solexes in the shed with manifold, have had the car running on then but was unhappy/need tune - will sort them out next season maybe

Sweet, port matched to the head is a big thing. I got my dellorto manifold enlarged and matched to my head. makes it flow heaps better. hopefully he has enlarged the ports and the manifold while he was at it.

It will be interesting to see what sort of power you get out of it.

Cool man! almost as powerful as my '75 Avenger, you're only 5HP under. you even have the same little spike as mine at 3,500RPM.

Put some bigger carbs and push so more revs and you should be able to make as much as my race car. I bet you feel a huge difference out on the track.

Time to change your signature I think.

Title: Re: Jokers evolving 1978 Avenger Discussion
Post by: avenga on April 18, 2011, 10:17:20 AM
Well I do have a set of Dellorto DHLA40's sitting on the race car gathering dust. I could be talked in to loaning them out to you until you find a set of your own.

I don't really want to sell them because they are so hard to find now days and if I ever want to do anything with the race car then I will need them back but they would be better used on your car than sitting in my garage.

They are proper DHLA40's not the DHLA40C's like on my '75 so they are better carbs than the ones on my '75. They are jetted for my race car so they should be sweet with your engine.

Give me a hoot if you are interested.
Title: Re: Jokers evolving 1978 Avenger Discussion
Post by: JoKer on April 18, 2011, 10:22:03 AM
would not mind semi-permanent loan if that is an option with agreement that if you wanted them back I can ship the next day etc

have current arrangement with the twin SOLEX's I have in shed too - I know they are worth a bit as well try to look after things that arent mine
Title: Re: Jokers evolving 1978 Avenger Discussion
Post by: avenga on April 18, 2011, 10:40:18 AM
Sweet. do you want me to take them off and ship them down to you so you can have them in time for the nats?

Got to have the Avenger kicking ass in the gymkharna.

That dellorto setup is worth about $600, even more if you have to get them rejetted and filter etc. I got my ones on my '75 for $500 for the carbs + $100 for the manifold + $630 for jets and chokes + $440 for the K&N. so the carb setup on my '75 cost me all up $1670!

Title: Re: Jokers evolving 1978 Avenger Discussion
Post by: avenga on April 19, 2011, 07:10:25 PM
Okay I have unbolted the carbs for you. They look really good, butterflies look sweet.

I can only see 2 problem.

1. One of the pump rod has come loose, you just need a little bolt to hold it on. I had a quick look but couldn't find in the right size, should only be a few cents from the hardware shop.

2. The middle section of the manifold is broken. It is still holding it's shape because of the big beefy strut on the other end of the manifold and it will be pretty easy just to weld it up and grind it flat.

I took one of the air filters off and it has 35mm venturi and I measured the port size at the head and that is also 35mm.

Here are some photos. In the bottom photos you can see the little things that need fixing. Let me you if you are still keen.

Can't wait to see how the dellorto's run on your engine.

cheep at half the price! chur - didnt expect that but yea is another $100 I didnt have this week

and seeing as you broke it... haha (half hr labour welding $30 Planing $60 + GST)

Edit : just spoke to racer mate (has a Rotary Viva) reckon planing might be overkill and not really necessary, simple file flat by hand or pop it on one of my larger sanders should be fine

haha. I didn't break it. It was like that on the car. who knows how long it has been broken.

I blame my mate who built my engine for me. He should have put in a longer stud instead of cutting that notch out of the manifold. made it too weak and just the heat from the engine and pressure from the bolt and weight of the carbs would have weakened it over time till it finally broke.

Get it fixed and I'll sort you out. I guess I may use it again sometime down the track but also remember the saying "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

Yeah man. Race tape fixes anything. I have fixed worse things with race tape.

I used to pit crew for my mates go karts and we used to do some such dodgy repairs with race tap. I wish I got some photos aye because some event I swear the only thing holding the kart together was tape.

This sort of thing but worse

lol will see how their welding goes : what did ya use to clean those carbs up Andrew?

I have heard carb-cleaner mentioned BUT I have some degreaser in a can and half a brake cleaner can also plenty of thinners here at work - gave the intake a bit of a rub and plenty of silver paint came off - a bunch of expoy is smeared around one of the runners, no biggie

Man those Dellortos sound awesome. I love the angry sound of a good set of side drafts. Can't wait to see what it does on the dyno.

Not too much dramas getting the old girls going? they were good carbs. I did many races and rally with those carbs. Engine bay looks great with the big carbs.

Time to kick ass at the OS nats.

Sweet. I saw you had a late one last night.

Fuel regulator isn't needed if your electric fuel pump is limited in pressure. they one in my '75 is so it will limit the fuel pressure to 3 PSI but the one in my race car was bigger and just pumped nonstop with as much pressure as it could so I needed to regulate it.

Dellortos really don't like too much fuel pressure so about 3 PSI is perfect. So if your fuel pump can't keep a steedy pressure then you don't need to use the regulator.

Yeah dellortos can be a pain to start. I have got used to it and it is second nature to me having used Dellortos for years. 2 pumps on the gas then 1/4 throttle while cranking usually does the trick but my race car was stupidly hard to start because the cam is much lumpier than yours and the compression is much higher.

All fun and games. Be cool to see what it does on the dyno.

turns out those wee nuts [not nits] are the key :P fires piece of piss with actuator in - big fuel rush (was running without in vid

Oil recommendation? is draining now

I use Penrite HPR30 20w/60 in my Charger and Avengers.

Plenty of zinc and they are made for 70's era cars.

Your Avenger looked great at the Nats. It smokes up pretty good now and I would say you were the most fun to watch. Plus looking back at the pictures I am pretty sure you did the whole thing with your elbow out the window.

I have heaps more photos of your Avenger which didn't make the final cull because I have like 30+ shots of you laying down smoke and I didn't want to over load everyone with 100's of photo's. I had to cull them down to 150 photos so I tried to do only 3-4 of each car but I think I did 6-7 of your car. My short list of good photos had 22 photos of your car in it :)

You should have a blast down there. Make sure to get plenty of pics or videos of your Avenger tearing up the track.

or ballast/co-driver to keep that side down!

Yeah I run really hard springs in the back of my race car.

You could borrow my rear springs if you want. They would probably be too hard for road use. The only problem I had was finding short enough shocks. I ended up using shock towers in the boot.

Taupo on the 19th Aug is next outign and I already know it like to lift coming onto the front straight

My suspension setup used to work great at Taupo.

I don't know if I will sell them because they are so hard to find. If anything it will be a loan like the Dellortos.

Epic man. Those are kick ass results.

Look at how close you were to that lotus 7 in the morning session. Those are seriously quick cars so to be within a hair's breadth of them is pretty epic indeed.

I reakon you could have thrashed them if you had a little less drifting with the elbow out the window action going on.  :P

Not so fast Tonto...is your flatmate covered by your car insurance?
If Yes, you'll lose your no claims bonus and have to pay the first $500.
If No, you'll need to say they 'borrowed' the cars without permission and the insurance company will chase them up for the $$$ repair costs and $500 excess, causing your flatmate to suddenly move out!!
You can do a lot of DIY repairs for $500...getting your flatmate to stump up with some money might be a better option?!

Title: Re: Jokers evolving 1978 Avenger Discussion
Post by: avenga on May 02, 2012, 01:54:00 PM
Yeah I do still have my caged car.

Not sure if I would sell it or not. I have owned it for like 14 years or so and it was my first car so it has a lot of centimental value to me.

But to be honest I will probably never race it again and it would be good to see it used for what it was intended for.

it still has the trick estate rear suspension, has stock front suspension now but that would probably be better for gravel. It was set up for tarmac before so it would have been too hard for gravel.

Let me know what they say about your car and if it is written off then we can have a chat about my race car.

2k cage/shell
1k safety equip

they are trying to value it now and say it was ruff pre accident : might have a fight on my hands

AON : insurance brokers i think

You will, as it's worth much less whole than in parts.
Maybe better to ditch the insurance company and repair it yourself/sell the parts or transfer them to another car?
That way you also get to keep the live tags/plates.
If they take ownership, it will be de-registered and sold as a wreck.
Title: Re: Jokers evolving 1978 Avenger Discussion

upside : just spoke to "valuer who didnt want the job lol"

agreed $1500-2k for the "shell" alone (inc. cage)

he's trying to figure out why insurance made it sound like they were trying to ignore the cage part IE simple shell = $150 at most

It's just amazing, you still use these cars to race, here is not like this :(. I like to see photos in which engine is open and all parts are in fixing process. My enginee has never been opened with 170.000kms over its shoulder.

Nice restoring work Joker, Congrats! that Hill looks very spicy.

Awesome, hope you get the '76. looks like an awesome bargin for what it is. Are you going to use it as a road car?

Nicko, there is quite a few Avengers racing in New Zealand. I used to race an Avenger back in 2000-2005, and we have a few other members who have rally/race Avengers.

They make great race cars due to their light weight and good handling.

A few of the Avengers that rally here use an imported 1800 block from South America.

Post by: Dodge1500 on May 30, 2012, 02:13:17 PM
You are kidding me Avenga! Blocks from South America?? Maybe they could have belonged to Dodge1500 M1.8 as it is denominated here. Incredible :) I visited Sales forum and I noticed that some of you posted argentinians cars on sale, like the Volkswagen 1500, full of proud gentlemen.
I can't still believe that NZ cars are in a 90% I think, similar than our Dodges. I know mine like my hand and some pieces and parts are the exactly the same. I did not watch Joker's videos cause I am on a netbook and it sucks! but tomorrow I will take a loo at them.

Regards! Have a nice day (here is evening ja!)

Nicko. the 1800 brazil engine is the motor of choice for rallying. In 1976 Andrew Cowen won the Heatway Rally of New Zealand in a 2 door Avenger with a Brazilian 1800 in it.

They import the 1800 engines from Brazil or Argentina then bore them out to almost 2000cc. I always wanted to import an 1800 engine for my race car but I couldn't afford the shipping etc when I used to race. Instead I used a 1600 bored out to around 1750cc.

Here is a link to one of them http://www.avenger.co.nz/forum/index.php?topic=168.0 and here are some photos of another 1800 rally car in New Zealand http://groundsky.co.nz/index.php?Action=VEN&EventCode=0711&EntrantID=7512

Awesome Jarrod!!! We so need to have another Avenger meet.

Do you want my V8 Avenger body shell???

Free to a good home if you want it. Storage is costing an arm and a leg and I'm never going to use it now that I have put the V8 in the wagon.

The body has all been done so it is spotless. It's sitting in primer up in a storage container up in Auckland.

I'm going to put it up on Trademe shortly but if you want to save me the hassle then that will be great.

The storage yard just emailed saying they are increasing the rent from $154 per month to $180 per month so it is just burning a hole in my back pocket and I am never going to get around to using it since I have the wagon build burning through the rest of my $$$$$

I googled car transport quickly last night : would be around $600 (I don't have at the moment)

and looking at it its a deal currently hard not to turn down!

but (always something)

mate reckons he might be able to stich things back together on mine with a mig welder & some time & patience

that and the steel work on your car looks very impressive & I'd hate to be the guy to bend that, and it would end up on my damp lawn outside (though I have scaled back my business so there is floor space here....

so I'm thinking hard about it! (part of me says pop it on the tard & see if you can make some coin back & another part of me want to come for a drive & get it now LOL

earliest I would be available for a roady is weekend 19/20th May or 26/27th, I may have to consult my wife.....

richards offer is a blessing you will be chasing rust on your old shell forever the only downside is swapping the cage over could be costly time consuming and you will need that.
everything else is doable, when you bend the body just trim back bent bits as you go and then you will be left with something that works.
