This is a thread to discuss Oldschool's fleet of Avengers (http://www.avenger.co.nz/forum/index.php?topic=45.0)
Hi Ross, Awesome collection of Avengers you have.
First time in over 10 years I have seen a genuine Avenger Alpine and the first time I have seen an Avenger auto. Next time I am out that way we will have to do a bit of a cruise so I can see what that legendary auto is like on the road. I will take you for a ride in my hot 1500 in exchange.
Cheers for letting me come out and have a look at you collection. I was in Avenger heaven.
the autos go pretty hard. pick up speed really quick
good fleet, are those the original plates on avenga's blue one?
Man. I so have to try an auto Avenger now.
I am going to try replacing my BW35 in my Charger for a BW45 from an Avenger. see what that does.
Yes they are the original plates on my Avenger.
ive got the original plates on mine too and judging by the pictures that oldschool sent me, looks like his auto also has its originals
Ive always wanted to take 4 stage auto in a Avenger for a drive, I had a car lined up a few years ago, the guy never got back to me and I never saw the car again, a yellow Chrysler 1.6GLS :(
Both my '75 Avenger and and my Charger have original plates. My '80 race car has the personalised plate AVENGA
Was that yellow GLS in Auckland?
I love the old plates, they suite the older cars, Is that a real personalised plate?
Nope GLS was here in Napier, I used to keep an eye out for Avengers, on lawns, up driveways, anywhere, a bit of a Avenger stalker LOL
Yeah it is a real personalised plate. I got it back in about 2002 or there abouts. I was really surprised that they still had it. I got it after I had finished turning it in to a race car because I wanted something that would look cool on the track. I never handed in it's old black plates so I still have them in the garage. It used to be JU2660 before I got the AVENGA plates.
I wouldn't personalise my other 2 cars. I like the black plates. I think they suit them.
yeah ive considered getting a plate but the black ones look nicer plus personaliseed ones are expensivvve
I got my personalised plate back when they were only $500. Now they are about $900 they are such a rip off. I agree black plate are better.
plus its quite cool to still have the original plates. i know this because i found a little book in my glove box about the first person that owned it
I think my Electric Fiat one cost $300 about 20 years ago....lol
Didn't realise you have to fill out a seperate title transfer form for the plate, when you sell a car with a personalised one.
Sold my car in 2006 and bought it back last year, all the time I still owned the plate...lol
should have just reported it as stolen and got it back lol
Yeah...I saw a Rolls Royce with a STOLEN personalised plate a few years ago...hardcase!!
sounds like a good plan Ross.
What wheels are you going to stick on it now that you've sold your globes? (would buy them if I had money....haha)
Also, where did you get/are you getting your extractors from?
And keen to know how it goes with twin 1.75" carbs. I would have thought it would be over carbed.....?
Hi guys...with Scarlett now finished...it's time to move Sandy the Alpine into the garage for renovation!!
Plans include:
Remove minor rust and dings, then repaint in the original colour.
Replace bonnet and paint gloss black
Replace windscreen and rubber
Fit new exhaust system with extractors
Fit twin 1.75" SU carbs
Fit electric radiator fan
Fit sports steering wheel
Fit 14 x 6 mag wheels
Fit an in-dash tacho
Fit sports seats
Should be ready next month in time for the Nationals....lol
I can get extractors here in Auckland, probably through Richard as his ones are awesome!
I'll use adapter plates for the 1.75" carbs in case they don't work out, so I can put the 1.50" ones back on!!
SU (and CD) type carbs have a variable venturi (unlike weber's and dellorto's) keeping the mixture flow constant whatever the throttle position and engine RPM, thus avoiding the low speed problems that weber's and dellorto's often have.
I'm more concerned about it running rich, as the twin 1.75" carbs are out of a 2600cc Rover.
I'll put on 14 x 6 mags with 185/70 tyres - will decrease the diff ratio from 3.89:1 to around 3.70:1 for better highway cruising.
I think il run twin 1.5 SU's if I end up doing SU's (have twin stromburg cd150s ready for it at the mo). I think the 1.75"s will be too big/no gain over the 1.5"s but its worth a shot.
Let me know when you find some extractors, Im keen for some aswell at some stage.
Good to see someone else with plans, Ive lost all my car mojo lately haha, its just been one problem after another
...got my mojo back as I'm single again...need to find a chick that likes old cars...lol
Sound like she will be a beast by the time your finished Ross. Good luck on the finding a chick who likes old cars. My ex hated my Charger and as a result I didn't drive it for over 2.5 years.
And Andrew don't let it get you down. Old cars will alway give you shit, just lucky you are not doing anything as extreme as my car. My list of fixes and modifications is massive. You don't want to know how much time and money has been sunk in to my car but put it this way I probably could have brought and imported a Tiger for cheaper.
My carbs are spitting and popping like crazy in it's current tune. Probably need to convert a diesel alternator to provide vacuum to the brakes so it doesn't upset #4 carb and my linkages aint working properly so the back carb isn't returning to idle so that will need to be re-engineered. man it is just never ending but it will be awesome when I am done. I am already very close to Tiger spec in terms of power.
I will find out where my extractors are from tomorrow for you guys.
lol walked out of work doing nursing at a resthome last week and go "theres my little old lady" (re: my car) and everyone looked at me like i was a fruit loop. im sure there are lots of chiks that appreciate old cars Ross, but for now u have scarlet haha
my misses is pretty sweet with me and my cars. she just smiles and nods when i start rambling away. her taste is getting better as well in terms of what looks stupid or not haha
About the extractors here is what my mechanic said.
QuoteHeaders are supplied by Bygone autos @ $295 + gst & if they want them to look like yours (HPC coated) approx another $150 +
you can quit any time you want aye ... :
Nice addition to the fleet.
Ross and I had a look at this car on the way back from the OS Nats and I was going to make a for sale ad for it on the forum but Ross decided to buy it. And good on you because it was a steal for the amount you paid.
It was great to see it on the road in Hamilton over the weekend.
I will have a hunt around for all my AR Chrysler Avenger bits and pieces.
AR?
Avenger Red.
It is the colour all the cool Chrysler Avengers came in :D
It is the same colour as my race car so I have some spare body panels etc.
AR colour is Apache Red
I have heard it called Apache Red but I also have a sales brochure from the time calling it "Avenger Red"
Slowly doing up the AR Avenger, repaired the small ding at the r/r and changed the gearbox oil...shifts a lot smoother with the correct 20/40 engine oil in it rather than diff oil...lol. Next job pull out the dash and fix the tacho and speedo needles curled up and stuck on the glass, then patch up the vinyl roof.
Patched up the vinyl roof with some bitumen and fixed up the tacho and speedo needles...took a bit of brain-storming as they weren't metal like I thought they would be, they're plastic...so pushing them down to straighten them had no effect...they just sprung up again...haha
Thought of using my hot air paint stripping gun to melt them a little and then bend them straight...but I'd probably melt the whole dash...lol
In the end I got a knife and used a lighter to heat the end of it, then gently placed it under the needle where the bend started and pushed the end of the needle down...after a few goes the needle straightened up ok...phew!
Had fun with the steering too...it always been heavy and after jacking the front up I found out why. When I turned the steering wheel, it went stiff..easy..stiff..easy..stiff..easy..I thought aha! not enough oil in the steering rack, so topped it up, but it made no difference. Just about to pull the rack out to get it overhauled, when I thought about the symptoms a bit more...a light came on...what about the steering universal??
Sure enough it was dry. After a bit of CRC and oil it freed up and now the steering is a lighter than Oprah Winfrey!!
Great nest of Avengers lads. Good luck
i would classify Ross's collection as more of a cult
So how many is that total? Three? Do you get weird looks from the neighbours?
I have had 4 Avengers at one stage (plus a XF Fairmont Wagon for a total of 5) - though never at the same place.
There's 5 here...I got weird looks before I had the Avengers, so no change there...lol
Westies are pretty relaxed about cars all over the place.
Not so in Mt Eden, my friend with heaps of Fiats on his property got hassled by the council after his neighbours complained. He had to put up a high fence shielding them from the road...looks worse than before...haha
Wish I had photos of my drive on this machine to show off... must have forgotten to get them off the camera. Perhaps it is for the best: I can hide the same of exactly how many Marinas I have.
Fortunately I have an extensive carport for 3 cars (Could prob squeeze in another if I tried) and a large fence.
When I lived with my parents it was a whole different story. House was opposite the entrance to the main soccer fields in town, and right smack in the middle of 4 schools... and here we are me with the shell of an avenger upside down on the front lawn, Minis everywhere and at various times an A30, Morrie Thou Ute, Valiant, XF Falcon, and a selection of old Nissans... haha. We brought the whole street down.
Awesome work on the Alpine Ross. I really enjoyed my ride in the Alpine on Friday, drives really well.
Grant did an amazing job on that seat. Looks better than brand new, he did a great job matching that pattern on the back of the seat.
whao nioice!
swap you a Honda?
lookin good now.i had wondered were that orange avenger from blenhiem went to.is it as clean as it looked on trademe.i was all set to go down with the cash that night but the guy rang back to say it was sold.
nice collection now.
I'm spoiling myself having two Alpines, a 1974 and a 1975. Took me 3 years of searching to get the 1974 one...very special as it's the first year of the 100mph 1600 Alpine. So many haven't survived...raced, rallied, rolled and rusted!
I drove it back from Napier and parked it up. I think it's only done 115,000km and still has its factory vinyl roof which was originally light brown (same colour as the vents) as I found out when I removed the old windscreen rubber...lol
I saw the 1975 one on TradeMe last September, thought that would get snapped up quickly...a few days later it was still there(??) so I thought to myself, I'll grab that if no one else is going too!? I rang the guy, sent him the money, flew to Wgtn, picked it up from the wharf and drove back to Ak via my mates place near Tokoroa. Not without drama as the alternator gave up and the battery went flat on the way!
It's in good condition, no rust that I can find. The dash is out being recovered by Grant, then it'll be put in the garage to fit the 5 speed box...Note to self...don't drive it with the dash out, otherwise I'll get a face full of oil from the oil gauge hose!!
It's interesting to compare the 1974 and 1975 model specs...mechanically the same, just small upgrades for 1975...like electric washers, sports steering wheel, rev counter, head light relays and a viscous radiator fan...Chrysler were pulling out all the stops...lol
I retro-fitted a rev counter in my 1974 Alpine, uses the same Delco gauges as the 1975...and after seeing Richards Smiths gauges...I want to trade in the Delco ones...!!
are u lanning on selling any?!? :P haha
Ohh Yeeaaah! Looking Good there Rosss!! hahahaha
I'm selling Scarlett in a month or two....I think Mikey wants her as his wagon is too slow...haha
