Am I right in thinking that the 1500 super engine is the same as the mark1 cortina engine?

Nope, totally different engine.

The Mark1 cortina came out in 1962 and uses the Ford "Kent" engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Kent_engine

The 1500 engine in the Avenger was made by Hillman especially for the Avenger and came out in 1970.
