Title: Fitting a Mk5 2L Cortina 3.45:1 rear axle in an Avenger??
Post by: oldschool on February 06, 2011, 08:50:43 AM
Has anyone done that to lower the revs on the highway??
Same driveshaft and wheels, just have to change the mounts and handbrake?
This would be a really good upgrade for an Avenger Auto, they rev their heads off at 100 km/h!!
Took mine up to 120 km/h once...then it blew out a frost plug...whoops!!
Didn't notice it as it lost water so fast, the temperature gauge stayed the same....lol
Wondered why 10 kms later it was smoking and pinging!!
Had trouble stopping the motor when I parked, it was dieseling so bad....had to pull out the choke.
After two hours it stopped fuming and we towed it home...I was sure the motor was TOAST.
But no....put in a new frost plug, filled her up with water and away she went...try that in Jappa!!

Wouldn't the width be too wide? I measured the spare diff I have here and it is ~1370mm drum face to drum face. Thats very similar to Escorts (1350). Not sure what a cortina diff width is. Would be good though.

The Cortina diff is 1515mm drum face to drum face...145mm wider than an Avenger one.
Maybe too wide to fit without shortening it, which costs about $400.
