Title: WTD: Avenger Interior Parts
Post by: The_Jims on September 05, 2011, 08:27:20 PM
Hi everyone,

My flatmate has just purchased an Avenger and is looking to revamp his interior. We are looking for parts such as a rear seat, dash and we need to find a good place to purchase pre-cut carpets.

Also, does anyone know if Hillman made a centre console that goes around the gear stick and meets up to the dash?

Cheers,

Jimmy

Hi Jimmy and welcome to the forum.

Autodec make new carpets for the Avenger. They are fully mould and made specially for the Avenger.

I installed a set in my Avenger about a year and a half ago and they are still going great. I installed them myself and they fit really easily.

Here is their website http://www.autodec.co.nz/

In the later model Chrysler Avenger they have a center console around the gear stick. This can be retro-fitted to an early model Hillman Avenger. I did this on my '75 Avenger.

I got my seats repaired at a local auto upholsterer and they did a great job for pretty cheap.

Read my "Members gallery" thread, I took photos of the carpet install and you can see the center console and seat repairs also. http://www.avenger.co.nz/forum/index.php?topic=13.0

The later Chrysler centre console looks good on the early Hillman model, has space for a stereo and you might even get a clock...lol
One problem though, it covers the bonnet release lever, so that will need to be moved or done away with and fit bonnet pins like Richard did.

Thanks for the reply guys!

I will pass this information onto my flatmate (who owns the avenger), and will make him join up to this forum! It seems like such a friendly and informative forum!

He bought it off a guy in Albany. His grandfather worked in the Hillman factory in england back in the 1970's.

I believe one of you may have even gone to check it out. It is in pretty good condition but we would like to start restoring the interior!

Hopefully you guys could help him out! Look forward to possibly meeting up with a group of you and possibly going for a cruise!!

Cheers!

Was that Axel's Avenger he just sold?

I went around to check it out before he sold it.

It is a really unique Avenger, it was built in the UK and shipped over here in '75. It is only the 2nd UK avenger I have seen and the only 4 door UK Avenger I know of in NZ.

I live just round to corner from Axel so if you need any help with the Avenger then let me know. I have a '75 Avenger the same year and colour as your flatmates ones and I have done all the mods you want to do on mine so if you want to check out the finished product then give me a yell.

Is the car still in the Auckland area?

Hi Avenga,

Yup it was Axel's Avenger!

Yeah we noticed it was a UK Hillman, quite a rarity!

It would be awesome to keep in touch man! My flatmate and I are in Epsom so the car is still in Auckland!

Would be great to check out yours sometime for some inspiration!

Cool. There are a few of us in Auckland. We quite often go to carshow together so I will give you a yell when the next one is on, or just give me a yell and you can pop over and check out the Avengers (I have 2 of them)

Oh, another thing I just remembered. When I went to see the Avenger I noticed it had UK seats in it. You won't be able to find a set like that in NZ because the NZ Avengers had locally made seats which are a different design to the UK ones.

You would be better off repairing the ones you have to keep that unique UK design. I can give you the number of my upholsterer if you like. He is on the North Shore.

Oh great, thanks mate!

Yes if you could pass on the details for your upholsterer to me that would be great!

Also, would you happen to know if wheels with an offset of 38mm would likely fit onto the avenger without any rub?

The rim is 7" with 215/40/17 Tyres on them.

Cheers,

Jimmy!

I would guess they would rub. I have never tried 17's on an Avenger, the biggest I have gone is 205/60/R13 on my race car and they rub.

I will PM you the details of my upholsterer.

Most the main panel looks okay. I bet you could probably get that fixed pretty easy. I would say all they would need to do is some new piping and then make a new top panel and just trim a bit off the top of the front panel where it is ripped. Get it re-foamed at the same time and it will be sweet.

It means the join will be a little lower on the back but you wouldn't notice it because it is such a rare seat. love the colour, most NZ seats are some shade of tan. Reminds me of Mark's wagon.

The seats I have are black so no good for you.

Blue was a std Todd colour in the early years, as avenga says get an upholsterer to put a panel across the top. The foam should be easy to reglue or replace the damaged section.

that seat pattern is what the "low" level Plymouth Cricket cars got. All were high back, the h
"high" level seats were more plush, and had a different pattern
