Title: My automotive photography website
Post by: avenga on August 12, 2011, 11:34:11 AM
Hi Guys. As some of you may know I have been doing some freelance motorsport photography for a few magazines lately so I have decided to go professional and build myself a website for my photography.

You can check you my site at either on these 2 addresses.

http://www.carphotos.co.nz
or
http://www.rpmphotography.co.nz

I will change the way I post photos to the forum from now on. Instead of doing massive photo dumps like I have I will post a few shots and then post a link to my new website so you can view the rest of the photos there. This will make it easier for people with slow internet so you can see the thumbnails and just veiw the photos you want to see. The website has a pretty cool navigation system (full screen and scroll wheel etc), from the front page you will see all the events I have been to in chronological order. There is also a calender that you can use to see all the photos taken on any date, my photos go back to 2009 and I have over 3,000 photos on there.

I have spent the last few weeks designing the website and it is still under development so I would love to hear any feedback from you guys.

The main reason for the switch to my own website is to make it easier for people to get photos of their cars, at hillclimbs etc I get asked by a lot of people asking how they can get copies of the photos so this way I can give them a website to view the pictures.

I will also update this post with new events I have been to.

Thanks heaps guys for your support and encouragement with my photos.

wicked pix but frustrating having to scol back to the top to go to next page ;/ assume you dont have control over layout?

Post by: avenga on September 07, 2011, 09:14:23 PM
I could probably do some PHP hacking to get it to show next page links also.

I want to do some more customisation, like when you click on the thumbnail it goes to the bigger photo but people don't know you can zoom in bigger then use the mouse wheel to scroll to the next image.

I will do some tweaking in a quiet time because I will probably break it while I try stuff, but try the zoom in and mouse wheel thing. It works really wheel if you know it exists.

Thanks for your feedback.

hover and preview larger is cool, would not stress over wheel mouse

the pic of the car goin in the kitty litter is the best!

Yeah I like at shot also. That will be in next months Petrolhead magazine. I have 2 articles coming up in next months issue, and I have also had articles in the last 2 months issues so it is really cool that I am starting to get more magazine work.

for the zoom, at the moment I use this http://www.fancybox.net because it is free and intergrates with my site and supports mouse wheel scrolling.

I could switch to this but they charge a small fee http://www.magictoolbox.com/magiczoomplus They make a few different zoom products.

Jared. I have added a navigation carousel under the photos.

Can you have a look at it and tell me what you think, see if it helps navigation.

Cheers

now thats neat

more thumbnails per page possible?

foo check out http://anti-rice.com/galleries/index.php for swish!

I know not every idea of mine is good :P so dont always listen to me! is just my personal feedback
Title: Re: My automotive photography website
Post by: avenga on September 08, 2011, 01:22:57 PM
I can do more thumbnails but they will have to be smaller so they can match the width of the preview image.

I found 5 was a good compromise between thumbnail size and amount of thumbnails.

While that anti-rice website does look swish it is a bit to flash if you know what I mean (pun intended) If you use flash on a website now days it means that you can't view it on a iPhone or iPad. While that is only a small portion of users I don't want to do anything that would make users not be able to view the site. Also I wouldn't be able the intergrate my cart etc.

They do have something like that which goes in the sidebar of my site. or I can intergrate this into the slide show.

Jared. Try the slideshow now.

Go to an album and click the little slideshow button in the top right corner. If you think it is good I will make a more link to it.

I have also put page controls on the top and bottom of the album pages so you don't need to scroll up to the top to goto the next page etc.

Hi Guys. I went down to check out the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony last night and took some photos of the fireworks.

As usual you can view them on my website here http://www.rpmphotography.co.nz/index.php/RWC-Fireworks or try my new flash viewer here RWC Fireworks (http://www.rpmphotography.co.nz/index.php/slideshowex/view_slideshow?rss=/index.php/index.php/rss/feed/gallery/album/4612)

Let me know what you think of my new flash viewer, works great in fullscreen mode.

Yeah I was talking to the driver afterward and he said it was pretty freaky. I jumped out of the way after that shot because it was coming right towards me and I thought it was going to roll. It was actually after the corner it happened, that is why the nose is a bit cut off. It happened when he got the power down.

Here are the shots of that corner in series. last shot shows how high he got and how close to me he was. I was crouching in the first 3 shots but in the last I was standing and about the run up the bank.
