Title: Jokers evolving Rally Avenger
Post by: JoKer on January 14, 2011, 08:23:51 PM
Pre History on this car via https://www.facebook.com/groups/793190637378550/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/793190637378550/)

Quote from: NZ Rallying History facebook page Trevor Weir

Built by Miles Fowler in Wellington, updated from standard GL body shell to Series 7 Chrysler just before I bought it in the mid 1980's. Used in many club level events then sold to Andrew Elder in the Hawkes Bay. Rolled at Salisbury Rd hillclimb and reshelled into a GLS shell. Andrew sold it back to Peter Weir as his first rally car. This has done soooooo many events and is a bit like Grandad's axe !!

Basically we turned around and ran 1st with very little time to cool down - water temp off the gauge after 1km loose rad pressure - fuel line next to 'zaust melts a hole and sprays flammable stuff towards firewall/ignites oil breather and lines on top of the motor - nothing substantial lost except my COOL Talbot sticker :/

drove it back down :P

/end Sat (Skip 3rd final run for the day)

Sun - car relictant to start - I give up, mates roll it off and tow- start it

suffer major heating issues all day again BUT complete all 5 runs with improvements on every one!

8:30
8:09
8:06.50
8:06.05
7:59!!!!

slightly over filled with oil - did not smoke till it was left idleing for over 5 mins (would not start hot - assume rings/lost of compression on 1 or more cylinders

ie the motor is relatively poked and not surprising for a 30+ year old donk!

so trip to welly over weekend :

ok

so turns out there was a teaspoon of water/moisture sitting on the valves and a fair amount of rust, nothing a bit of valve paste/elbow grease cant rectify

head off, cleaned the whole block

pistons out, concerned about the amount of slap

not blaming anyone, just sorting it out :P

pics after 'puter restart, also was some weird dust on the pistons which inspired to remove/check head glad i did now , flowed out on rotation of stand

there was mention of maybe should not run 'hot' plugs on av-gas.. fair amount of pitting - suspect Det

Quote from: 1vakndOkay so i have hired out the full track at taupo for the whole day on the 19th of august. This is going to be for my birthday so am not aiming to charge serious coin. let me know if keen on chicaine or not.

So prices will be $80 per car for owner/driver and $20 per additional driver.

Hopefully this will also be  debut of the EJ20 KP Starlet!!!!

This track day is NOT being organized by any car club or any mods on any car forum sites. This is all me so please be patient in replys to questions.

Basic rules will apply. All persons in any car on the track must be wearing a helmet and full cotton overalls. No cage means no passengers. I am allowing dudes with half cages to hAve passengers. There will be scruitineering and briefing in the morning before any car or driver is allowed on the track!
If you do want to attend please be responsible and treat it as if it was your name on the paper work.

If you do want to confirm a spot there are ten garages left(first in first served). Pm me and I will reply with payment details.

Confirmed thus far:
WDE_BDY  CK
Boost+K    CK or known as driftmaz OS
FATKP.      CK or Jake OS
Evobaby.   CK
Joker.       OS

now its run in time to see what we can REALLY do

seems I may have broken something on trip to work.. 1 wheel drive!

perhaps turning the car around in a 3 point turn on the drive is not a grand idea.... (still seems to have these slicks bolted on - teach me for being lazy!)

edit : should also remove tools and junk from the trunk... rally flaps are scrapping making ppl look! haha

On board for a few laps chasing a MX5!

soooooo much fun to drive in anger - 180 kp (on speedo : unverified by GPS yet, may have to do a test run this weekend) down back straight, passed teh Demio and caught up and harrased Karmageddon's MX5 for the remainder before ripple strip lossened some leads on plugs/dizzy

I am also suspect about my bodge/fix to the exhaust gasket (used goo) as its  fitting and farting a bit/loosing power, possibly a Leek, oh and the exhaust fell off after 1st run too

headers needed to come off and be repaired (4-1 collector was pretty stuffed/leaking)

made some plugs to block heater pipes

lucky I had it on hoist : RR shock had nearly undone it self as did the drive shaft AND steering wheel nuts!

new radiator and inline filler, um thats bout it, oil change and topped up gearbox fluids

Post Whariti Event report:

Car all sorted bout 4pm Fri Night which left me 2hrs to complete the 10x trophies for the actual prize winners!

spot the Radiator shield/air dam, Inline filler and relocated 'catch' can

So Sat rolls round : Sign in 8am Tui HQ, get car Scrutineered OK (sorted extra padding/Wheel nut and battery cover like requested at remote Scrutineer)

Head up road to Event, bum around till 11am : drivers briefing and line up for a "Tiki" tour, head off and only make it up half way before notice revs are a bit happy in 2nd gear = broken axle grrrrrr

loose forward momentum and have to stop/try and turn around, TRY!!

cant back out, have to wait for everyone to come back past, they all think I have crashed (Like my 1st run last year)

soooooooo tow out ease it back down and pull axle, find the good side had killed the bearing so off to The Weir House (coined new name) to 'borrow' 2 axles

got back in time to get it together and complete 2 reasonably good runs

1st run : keep teling myself just drive it wont be fastest etc, NEK MINNIT

what you are looking at is my tire line now 2km from the start less than a foot away from a pretty decent drop! was only doing 100kph or so, turns out I didn't repair RR shock proper (Did not find this till Sunday morning) making handling at speed/in straight line a bit hairy!

really really wish I had turned camera on for this run but seeing as was 1st did not think it was gunna be worth it :/

should have seen officials/other competitors faces when I turn up finsh with a fair amount of foliage adorning front of the car (could not see road for fern just after)

Run 2 less eventful, removed 20l of water from back seat (incase rad was not good 1st run : all seemed fine, suspect dodgy gauge/sensor now) thus turned out to be my fastest run of the weekend

Saturday: Turn up to slush/wet condition overnight, had to get 4wd guy to tow car out of pit-paddock, figure better jack it up and see what rattles : grr RR shock, cant do much, top nut is tight etc, has punched hole in top of housing bugger, ahh well

Run 1 : very ruff road conditions all goes good, except I only secure 1x bonnet pin and stop just past my previous tire tracks in the grass and yell at spectator till they secure the second :P spin out on a photography corner, at least 3 gusy there, Strobe blazing, miss one and stall/flood engine, 10 min run (by far slowest)

Run 2 : uneventful until 2/3rds way up the hill, where I undo all the hard work repairing exhaust from Friday and it shears off just past the 4-1 collector

Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tylh6HGREnE

turns out the floor gets quite hot there and if you spot smoke thats the Co-drivers nice white shoe-heel melting

Run 3: get asked to take the local Council Rep for a hoon, she suits up and I warn her not to put foot there :) good run, no drama's roads ruttign quite baddly now

Run 4 : roll up to start, Peter (previous owner before me) mentions oil drip, uhoh

he offers to sell me the sump guard they used, but bit late right now! top'er up and off

Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iopX9TFCOIw

all goes good, is fastest time of the day for me and the RR shock issue rears its head 2/3rds way up, I start hearing bad rubbing around Axle and imagine the spring has fallen out, well turns out close

good side :

bad side:

bit bendier than it should be and sounded like it was dragging its ass/rear valance over the bigger bumps!

I did not come last and car sounded great on song sans-exhaust!

back to Tui HQ for BBQ dinner and prize giving, turns out I dropped my Front Number plate uo the hill and they had great joy returning it to me in front of everyone hahah, won spot prize of Tui-mato Sauce and was dubbed "The Avenger Man"

reckon I got the most cheers of any competitor and everyone seemed to love the Strobe lights!!

never bothered changing tires all weekend : Sunday was just too wet/road conditions bad so was concentrating on having fun, which I did :D

all I need now is Avenger.co.nz t-shirt and sticker on roll cage for video, sort suspension out and ready to roll next event!

Exhaust errors (squashed bottom two and kinda broke it off causing shoe melting heat inside the cabin)

Sump error : Peter has a sump guard he wants to sell me, removed all bolts tonight and ready to swap over after I find/clean a spare

Also drove the S7/'80 round the block, speedo/rev counter no-go (suspect similar story with fuel gauge), weird having retractable seatbelts! no rad fan, and plugged tail lights back in but reckon they don't work either, dash lights all work

thinking seriously bout taking it for a WOF if I can get the basics sorted, has only been off road for 3 years, might check see if my friendly wof man can tell me what it failed on if it was recorded at the time

boring Insurance update : Rang Agent left a message seeing where we are at etc.

get call from a bloke called Terry in Auck's he's sending a guy called Alan from Hastings to do an assessment/grab a statement from me etc.

Agent is with Star Insurance according to his Voice-mail, via Aon I thought it was called Classic Car but whatever... maybe not a good idea to have the spare S7 on the property when he calls LOL

Stripped the head of the old tired 1600 I was running in this (and previous '78 since about 1998) to scavenge the Head/exhaust valves etc.

neat~o carbon build-up on heads and spot oil pool in centre of the block! that aint right, single valve springs and had a fresh gasket before I got it, unsure of origin, as was out of car when I bought it off a mate

Plan on rebuilding this block as a good spare (have origianl 1300 out of the '78 in shed complete as well)

twin cam chain conversion : assume cover is deeper/different and using the spare kelfor Ground Cam I have lying around [one day]

Some extra history on this car via https://www.facebook.com/groups/793190637378550/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/793190637378550/)

This has done soooooo many events and is a bit like Grandad's axe !!

long time since updates here!

Took the ol'girl our for some dirt-drags last year & lost 2x forward speeds

3rd & 4th decided to not provide any thrust, not to worr ythey wernt really needed on the mostly grass track anyway, max wheel spin etc

anyway spend a few hours today getting the box out today, not a major job

Unbolt Driveshaft, bout 6 bolts around Bellhousing, clutch & speedo Cable & some shimmying it pops out

gave it a clean & degrease then had a look inside

I was expecting ground gears & metal filings etc

then found these in the oil

and thats their home in the background, not the socket I used to move the selector fork

so dreams of 5 speeds will be on hold for now, seal her back up, refit & fill and drive it some more!

and a couple of random (standard) markings

Not much happening on the old girl, slowly Rusting away sadly, so today was Rally car Day @ Tui Brewery So got this off the Lawn :
