This thread is for any interesting Avenger parts you have seen on Trademe or similar sites.

It is a Kelford Cams F29 grind. From what I have read it is low end race spec. I don't know if your head would be big enough for it and it is more suited for dual webers/dellortos but could be worth a shot for $100. I use a custom made F63-7 Kelford cam in my road car.

These are some F29 specs I pulled off the net, they are from a toyota cam but I am pretty sure the F29 profile is the same over all car makes.

Awesome mate. be keen to see how it goes it your Avenger. Get that installed and those Solex carbs going and you should see quite a nice gain in performance.

Keep us up to date on how it goes.

Avenger front black high back seats

The guy is sending me some photo's but these are pretty hard to come by. I have high back buckets in my 1975 Hillman Avenger and they are much better than the standard low back seats. being black they might be out of a TC but I can tell when I see the pictures.

They do look like Avenger TC seats. Pretty rare. Here is a picture.

Yeah the TC (stands for Twin Carb) was only available in NZ in 1971 and 1972, it featured a full black interior with those seats. In 1973 the TC was replaced with the Avenger Alpine which was a 1500 Twin Carb similar to the UK GLS, it 1974 the went to 1600 Twin Carb.

The engine from my 1975 Hillman Avenger is a 1500 from a 1973 Avenger Alpine.

They were not all black, I had a 72 1500 TC with a beige interior...

Damn man I should never trust Wikipedia

Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillman_Avenger
In 1971 Todd's added a unique-to-NZ, sporty, 1.5-litre twin-carburettor 'TC' model with all-black interior trim, dashtop rev counter, side striping, high-back 'tombstone' front seats, special bright paint colours and new wheel trims, among other detail changes. This was loosely based on the UK GT but lacked that car's 'Rostyle' wheels, using NZ-made, look-alike pressed aluminium wheel trims instead.

I have only seen a couple of TC's and they have been black interior but a lot of the info on the net about NZ Avengers is a bit sketchy so that is why I made this site so we can hear from people who actually owned the cars.

Thanks for the correction and thanks for proving wikipedia wrong.

hillman avenger engine

Quote from: http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=350116758here i have my standard 1974 hillman avenger engine its a 1.5l was running when removed from car comes with 4 speed gearbox clutch and all the rest .
engine done 115000kms

will come with twin carbs and manifold if buy now is used

buy now $450 cash ono

Seems a bit pricey since I brought my 1500 Avenger Alpine engine for $100. Maybe I should sell my old 1500 with the downdraft weber if I can get that sort of money.

Sweet, The grumpy engine and new wheels should really transform your Avenger. You will be giving my Avenger a run for its money. You going dual carbs? dellortos? Webers? Strumburgs?

ill see what the engine specs are first. the guy is meant to be letting me know today. its in bits and needs a crank grind, but by the sounds of it its a pretty nice motor. should be able to get it pretty cheap as well. time will soon tell

Hillman Avenger Carpets "BUY NZ MADE"

Quote from: http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=350642784Replacement carpet sets for Hillman Avengers.

Sample photo only.

We also have Hunter - Hawke - Super Snipe - Imp - Super Minx - Rapier - Humber 80 - Humber 90 - Subeam Alpine etc etc

All available in 8 colours including Black.

All carpets in genuine Tufted Cut pile carpet.

We have matching Car Mats & Bootmats.

Full range of insulations for Engine Bay - Sound Deadning - Underfelt and Dynamat available

I got my carpets for my 1975 Avenger from these guys. They are made by Autodec in Manukau, Auckland. You can see photos of the installation under my "Avenga's 1975 Avenger (http://www.avenger.co.nz/forum/index.php?topic=13.0)" thread.

I installed them myself over easter weekend last year, they were a really good company to deal with, I rung and ordered them on the Monday before easter and he said he would get his guys to start making the carpets straight away so I could have it to install over the long weekend. They arrived at my doorstep on Wednesday morning, less than 2 days later. Can't ask for faster than that.

I chose to go for a dark chocolate brown, It looks much darker than in my photos. I had a few fitment issues with the mould for the transmission tunnel being too wide but I trimmed that and hid the cuts under the centre consoles. I also have to cut the carpets to get it to fit around the pedal box and heater but that was easily done.

Man those are awesome. You would have to put some serious flared arches on the get those bad boys to fit.

I had to roll the guards on my race car to get my 205/60/R13 tyres on 13x7 Hotwires to fit.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: hunted on February 01, 2011, 08:32:42 AM
haha yeh there is no way those will fit. my new rims are only 6" and maybe half that dish and they are inline with the guards

My 13x6" tridents with 185/70/R13 Goodyear rubber fits nicely under the stock guards, much bigger than that I think you will have to start modifying the wheel arches.

at the end of the day its all about offset really
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on February 01, 2011, 02:04:57 PM
True, I guess your offset is a lot different on your mags. I have never checked to see how much room you have on the inside on the arch.

I had a look at some of my old photos and here is one where you can see the inside clearance on my race car with its 205s, there is a bit of room but not enough for those 10" rims. Mini-tubbed Avenger anyone?

I saw this Avenger Wagon listed, Pretty rough shape, probably only good for a parts car unless someone is looking for a real project.

Chrysler / Hillman Avenger 1980

Quote from: http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=351898915Must go $1 no reserve

Bought this vehicle around 6 years ago, and has been a work in progress type ever since. Has had a WOF a couple of times but now the rego has lapsed so really only suitable as a donor car.

Has been professionally lowered with compressed springs and shortened shock absorbers - believe they can go into a sedan also.

The motor has a worked cam and twin carbs although one of the carbs (it may not go at the moment - Its been a year since I have visited the car...)

Also have a wildcat downdraft manifold for it (can seperate)

Heaps of spares inside the car though I think half of them are for an r31 skyline...

Nice Sportsline(?again cant remember) wood steering wheel - probably worth more than the car itself

gearbox and diff are in good nick from memory.

Probably other things but again been a year so I am a bit hazzy.

I will be down in christchurch on thursday 10th feb if anyone wants to view it will have to arrange for a time then, and will need the payment for the car and it to be picked up before 10am sunday 13th feb (as I am leaving chch again)

It looks like all the 1980 Chrysler Avengers are coming out of the woodwork lately.

Another 1980 Chrysler Avenger Estate.

Quote from: http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=352786813This car has been the most trustworthy car I have ever owned. It starts every time and is very quick for a 1600cc. There is a bit of paint missing on the back boot lid from having a bike on the back. It has been around the clock a few times so am unsure of the correct mileage as the odometer doesn't go up that high.
Features include a CD player / radio and towbar.

Would make a perfect first car or project as it gets plenty of attention. A great classic!

Does using a standard steering wheel in your race car work out better than a sports wheel Richard?
I'd like to get a sports wheel if anyone has a spare?
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on February 16, 2011, 01:25:06 PM
The standard wheel was way too big for racing so I switched to this wheel here. Much better for racing.

I went around to see this 1974 hillman avenger
(http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=356466147)

Body looks pretty tidy, I could see any rust so it could be a good base for a project or a reshell. It has a standard 1500 engine with dual strumberg carbs. Engine doesn't go because he is missing the linkages etc for the twin carb setup, he said the engine worked before he put the dual carbs on.

Here are some pictures.

Cheers
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on February 28, 2011, 07:13:31 PM
From what I saw of the body it is good, I couldn't see any rust but it has had a matte black paintjob done on it so I don't know if it is hiding any bog under the paint or not. The owner told me there wasn't any rust or bog under the paint.

He said he still has all the single carb gear and it was running well before he put the dual carbs on but best confirm with him before buying it just to make sure he has everything you need.

Inside is a bit rough, tears on the seats and the dash is pretty cracked up but what Avenger isn't now days. looks like it has been recarpeted with house carpets, could be wrong but that's the way they look.

It has a good set of tyres on it. The owner said it flew through it's last WOF. It still has a month or 2 of WOF left and the rego is on hold.

It had no battery or radiator fan, the owner said he was planning to put in an electric fan.

I think it is worth restoring Vs a parts car. The body looks solid and if you can negotiate a good price then it should be a good base for a project car but she does need some work.

Thanks Avenga

What would you say its worth?

My biggest problem is i live way down south so would cost abit to get it here but these things re quite hard to find bugger it. Espeacily down here at a reasonable price.

THanks Nic

Hard to say what it is worth. It depend how much you want it and how quickly the seller wants to get rid of it. 79avengerGL is selling his for $600 which I think is good for his Avenger. This one is very similar to 79avengerGL in that they both don't run at the moment and are both resprayed matte black. Both of them need work but they would probably both be worth restoring.

If 79avengerGL was worth $600 then I would guess this one would be worth a little bit more due to it being a 1500 instead of a 1300 and it does seem a bit more complete with all it's door cards and grilles.

He said offers so I would start the negotiation around the same price as 79avengerGL's $600 and see what price you can get it for. He indicated to me that he wanted $800-1000 for it. I think $1000 is way to high for a non-running project Avenger when you look at some of the other Avengers which have sold lately.

Sure is a tidy Avenger. I had the same seats in my 1980 Avenger GL.

Interesting they call it "Apache Red". It is the same colour as my '80 was and it's paint code was AR, I always jokingly said it stood for "Avenger Red" but that must be it's true name.

I like what they have done with the front speakers. Sort of the same idea as mine. Dashboard looks really mint which is rare for a Chrysler.

Makes that '80 Scout brought look like a good deal at that price. It will be interesting to watch. I hope who ever buys it joins the forum because it is a pretty rare model now.

Yeah you really need to do heaps to an engine to get the dellortos to work but those manifolds are rare so if you were ever thinking about doing it then they would be good to have.

Lynx make some wierd manifolds.

Here is a single weber for a Valiant 225 sloper

They also made a dual SU manifold for the Valiant Hemi 6
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: hunted on April 15, 2011, 10:10:30 AM
really have to wonder how much og an imbalance there is between the amount of air/fuel getting into each cylinder. I suppose the suction create in the bores would essentially shift the same amount of air/fuel for each cylinder so it wouldnt really matter
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on April 15, 2011, 10:51:53 AM
Yeah that is a huge problem with that. 3,4 are really rich then 2,5 are good and 1,6 are lean.

This is a standard manifold for a hemi 6

This is what I run, it has longer middle runners to help

With a plenum pig to help airflow

The slopers had more room so they had this to solve the problem completely

moral of the story however, is just run SU's at a maximum of 2 cylinders per carb. and if they are shiny then thats a bonus

Haha that is the worst carb setup I have seen on a Charger, wonder how it goes.

Yeah you would get heaps of throttle lag on that last one but you would get heaps more top end.

There was a factory option called the "Hyper-pak" which had long runners like that.

Hello my name is Rodrigo, I'm from Argentina and I have a Dodge 1500.Es a car much like the Hillman Avenger would be like a distant cousin jeje.Estoy interested in getting a intake manifold like the picture to put a webber 40 / 40 to have better performance, please let me know if you know of any that the venta.Un hug from Argentina
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on April 16, 2011, 05:20:49 PM
Hi Rodrigo. Welcome to the forum. We are very interested in the dodge 1500's. What model 1500 do you have? does it have the 1800cc engine? we only got 1300/1600cc engines in New Zealand.

As for the manifold there is a single weber lynx manifold on Ebay UK at the moment

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Talbot-Avenger-Weber-Webber-Dellorto-manifold-/330553387252

Or if you want dual weber then there is a dual monifold on Ebay also.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Talbot-Avenger-Twin-Weber-Webber-Dellorto-manifold-/330552235517

Ebay UK is probably the best place to look for performance parts as they are pretty hard to find in New Zealand. I had to get my dual weber manifold from Australia. Here is a picture of my engine bay. I run dual dellorto DHLA40 carbs.

Feel free to make a post under the Avenger Related section and or Members Gallery section and tell us all about your Dodge 1500

Austin Hillman Avenger 1975??? (I didn't know Austin made Avengers ;) )

QuoteThis Hillman Avenger was purchased new in 1975 by my grandma - now that she is 88 it is time to sell this classic. The k's are correct, however it has been around the clock once already. It is really well looked after and still has the original paint colour. It has a brand new battery in the car. Unsure of the stereo etc. however there has been nothing changed to the car so would expect that this be radio only. She has really taken care of this car and is in great condition. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Good luck with the sale of yours but don't think you are going to get away from the forum that easily. If you do sell your Avenger I still expect you to frequent the forum and post random crap. You are part of the Avenger family now so no getting out of your duties to the forum :)

Yes, That is a very cool car. Mike Courtney, the owner of that Avenger email me last night to tell me it was up for sale.

It is ex Ex Phil Ornstein rally car. It would be the most historically important Avenger left in NZ. It has been raced in the Heatway rally and Rally of NZ. Mike and Kirsten have also rallied it in the Targa 6 times.

It has a 2 litre brazil motor with a quick race and LSD.

You couldn't find a better example of a rally bred Avenger and I really hope in stays in NZ for the rally history of it.

I told Mike I would start a new thread for him so expect more info on it later today.

holy cow - I could not even get 2/3rds of that for my Legacy!

OTT

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/chrysler/auction-374061801.htm

I loled at 1st pic (soo not an Avenger) then clicked thru the rest... nice

still at least $1500 too much for an old car, I don't care how "in" old cars are right now

Yeah I lol'd at the Valiant in the first and last pictures also. '69 VF Valiant Avenger :)

I do think both of them are pretty high. I paid $4K for mine but that was OTT.

I think the realistic price for a good Avenger going by recent sales would be around $2.5K-3K, maybe up to $3.5K for a real mint one.

I thought we post stuff when our cars breakdown, must be why I've been quiet...nothing to report....haha
Well I did replace the alternator on Scarlett a little while ago and am planning to hook up the reverse lights sometime.
All Avengers have them, but they often aren't connected because Penny Pinching Chrysler wanted to save money...I've heard of Avengers being knocked back on WOF's in the old days because their reverse lights weren't working!!
And Yes the HB number was exclusive to Hawkes Bay I was told, by my car dealer cousin (and confirmed by wiki) Saw one on a 1974 Valiant when I was at the show in February. Definitely worth keeping it on my Alpine, rather than put a P plate on it!!

Yeah I want to do the same thing and hook up my reverse lights. Wonder if it will be harder getting them going on my 5 speed.

You can see the reverse light switch and cable in this photo.

The reverse cable from the gearbox connects to the wiring loom behind the battery under the brake master cylinder, where there's a couple of wires protruding from the loom. Then holders and bulbs need to be put in the reverse lenses and the wires pushed on (including earth wires) and it should all go?!

Hillman Avenger 1600 Race /Rally Engine

Quote from: http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=394533538Have this little retro gem for auction.
We bought this years ago for one of my sons Avengers.
It had been built up for a rally engine about 1985.
My son used it for about a year until it dropped a valve. (off a stock head it was running not the modified one)
From what I remember I was told by the original builder it ran 116mph (about 185kph) in one of the Ashburton street sprints.
Anyway heres from what I remember
Big valve head (43mm), nice big inlet ports.Radical cam, nothing much happened before 3000rpm then pulled strong to who knows where.Lightened and skirted hepolite pistons, extra flywheel dowels, originally balanced.Nice bore, bottom end, valve guides, needs replacement piston. Will need a good hot tank and clean, fresh rings and shells and it would be a beaut.
Comes with headers and twin Solex 40s and manifold.Block converted to studs.

Yeah it is a pretty damn good price. Don't know how well it will go on the street with nothing below 3,000RPM but I guess that is the way an Avenger engine is once it has been modified. Mine has nothing below 2,500RPM so it's not that much worse.

Reckon it might be cheaper to bring some 5 speeds in from Argentina??

or avengertiger it : toyota stuff iirc

like i said can make anything fit?
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on August 09, 2011, 07:24:57 PM
My Gearbox only cost $3000 because I wanted some bling that noone will ever see, but really I think you could get it done much cheaper. And now that Bygone have done all the hard work on mine and have a template they could probably make the adapter plate for a fraction of what mine cost because a lot of my cost was R&D.

I am really happy with they 5 speed, I was driving on the motorway and I changed down to 4th to pass a truck and I can't believe I used to drive around all the time in 4th, it just seems soo high revving.

5 Speed from Argentina would be interesting. Maybe we should ask some of our foreign members if they can ship a bunch out. Maybe include some 1800's.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: JoKer on August 09, 2011, 07:37:49 PM
hunter block/heads = 1800?

still not sure why the seirra is the 'must have'

Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: oldschool on August 09, 2011, 07:46:41 PM
Trouble is the Hunter motor is a bit of a dog...they took them out of the Iranian Hunters and put Avenger motors in...lol
Actually it's cheap and easy to just put a complete Pinto motor and Sierra 5 speed in an Avenger, but i don't want to lose that special Hillman-ness....haha
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on August 10, 2011, 12:48:19 AM
The Sierra isn't a must have, it is just easier because the clutch and driveshaft fit perfectly. They are all the same splines hillman and ford, and with the spacer then its the correct length so you don't need to do that much to them.

With say a Toyota T50 you need to make a new clutch and drive shaft. NZTiger went the T50 path so he would be the best to talk to about what he had to do to get the T50 going but with the Sierra it is just less stuff you have to do because it basically just slots in to place.

Hunter engine is a dog, It was out on the Humber so it was outdated even before they put it in the Hunter, really it is like a 50's engine so the Avenger engine is just lightyears ahead of it in engine design.

Chrysler Hillman Avenger 1974

Quote from: http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=398652246This is a 1974 Hilman Avenger.
Has been sitting for a while with the intention of sanding it repainting it and putting a new interior and motor in.
Sad to see it go, it has potential to be a nice car I just don't need a project at the moment.
Bidders are welcome to view.
It dosn't go but was going last year.
Took the seats out which were dusty and had mildew on them.

As you can see it would need a lot of work to get going but it is a nice shape and there is no dents in any of the panel work.

Not sure what this is worth in its present state so will let the market decide.

As is where is.

Thanks

Now you will have no excuse for not keeping up on road trips.

Let me know if you need any help with the conversion.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: oldschool on August 16, 2011, 08:04:11 PM
Yes will be good, you know me Richard, I don't like to over-rev...lol
I will need help converting it as there's so much engineering to do.
Will run it past a local firm that's done some electric motor to gearbox adapter plates for me and see what they say.
The photos from your conversion will be invaluable!!
It will be interesting to see what rpm's Scarlett will do in 5th using the standard 3.89:1 rear axle?
I know the Sierra 5th gear is quite tall, so Scarlett may go below the equivalent 3.7:1 ratio of my Chrysler Avenger GLS?
The Triumph TR7 used a 3.9:1 rear axle with a 5 speed box and that was a 2 litre, so mustn't have been revving too high?
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe

Post by: JoKer on August 16, 2011, 08:45:26 PM
found it

http://www.clubsub.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic,11040.0.html

Quote from: lan_killa
Ive built up this excel spreadsheet to as accurately as possible Calculate and Graph Speed Vs. RPM for your vehicle.

Very simple to use, download it here: RATIOCALCGRAPH.xls (http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~moliver1/RATIOCALCGRAPH.xls)

Enter in your gear ratios, final drive ratio, tyre size and RPM limit and it will produce a graph showing RPM Vs. Speed in each gear. The spreadsheet is only setup to map out to a maximum of 10,000RPM. This can be used on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 speed transmissions, simply enter 0 for your ratio on gears that you dont have.

If you want to see more detailed data, click on the DATA sheet at the bottom of the page.

To find out what your ratios are find your gearbox code on this site: http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/trans.html

I hope some of you find a use for this

obvously from my 'other' forum :P
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on August 16, 2011, 11:28:22 PM
FYI here are the type 9 sierra gearbox ratios

1st 3.65:1
2nd 1.97:1
3rd 1.43:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.82:1
Rev 3.66:1

That XLS file is pretty much bang on. It says I get 2,800RPM@100KPH in 5th with 185/70/R13 and 3.70:1 diff. With a 3.89:1 that would work out to around 2,900RPM@100KPH.

I already have a copy of this rally book or I would have hit the buy now already. It has a couple of pages on Cowan's Avenger and an add from Todd motors etc.

A must have for any Avenger rally fan.

Mines "Burntwood" But yeah, depends what they go for, if they will fit on my car without flares and what mainfreight is going to sting me to get them down here. Otherwise you should buy them as they are closer to you.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on September 30, 2011, 12:28:31 AM
I don't think 13x9 would fit without flares.

I run 13x7 with 205/60/R13 tyres on my race car and I had to roll the guards. We test fit some 15x8 with 225/50/R15 on my '75 and it sits about an inch or 2 outside the guard.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: 1300super on September 30, 2011, 02:06:31 PM
I dont know I've been doing some measuring up. with the measurements the guy gave the rears will problably stick out the guards by 1.5 inches. But I will be running 185/55/r13s so they will be fairly stretched, and hopefully just tuck under the guards. Im sure mr. Policeman wont like it though.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on September 30, 2011, 02:23:11 PM
Yeah 185 on a 9" will be pretty stretched. my 225 on 8" is pretty much a flat side wall, but that's just the look I like.

I don't think I could get away with 15x9 with a flat side wall. 225 width is getting pretty big for a small car so I don't think I would want to go any bigger.

Kiera is running 14x8 on the back with 175/70/r14 tyres and they are pretty stretched.

They just cleaned up that area recently, so I wouldn't be too certain anymore. Heaps of people got kicked off A reg. It took long enough: I haven't paid for a full G reg since 2004 or so. Luckily I now qualify for classic registration! :D

What are the costs for a car with Rally/Competition exemptions?

yea I re-registered as an ATV : car rego still on hold/exempt

BUT it does meet all requirements for ATV reg! (prove it doesnt I dare ya)

These caught my eye: roof racks.

and Twin Carbs
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/chrysler/engines/auction-410557157.htm

How long has that matt black car been up there? Looks to be a pretty decent parts car if you could argue him down a bit.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on October 01, 2011, 10:40:32 PM
I saw those roof racks, but would they fit on an Avenger? They say they are for a VH Valiant, I own a VH Valiant and I can tell you they are a hell of a lot bigger than an Avenger.

I think it is the 2nd time that matte black Avenger has been listed so I would say it has been up there for a couple of weeks.

Although I am a big fan of racks like that - got one of my Van now (with proper gutter mounts) - I don't think they work for Avengers. Hunters and squarer cars: yes. Maybe an Estate could get away with it if done right, but it would take a lot to convince me.

However tomorrow I hope to finish scraping the baked on gasket off, put the new one on, Smash the head back on and fire it up.... fingers crossed. number one bore has a bit of a score in it but compression was ok so im going to pretend i didnt notice it. Next time the motor blows up it will be a full rebuild & rebore anyway. Or mite look at other engine options.

How hard is it to come across lotus motors? A stockish one of those would give just about the right amount of performance, every day drivability, and authenticity that you could hope for.

On the other hand I do really love the sound of the OHV. (Apart from my stuffed tappets never staying in tune)

Yes, being all letters with great pronunciation, I was surprised it was still available when I bought it in April last year!!
Got it to put on an imported or re-registered Avenger, but not needed now as I'm happy with my 1975 Alpine on original black plates.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on January 30, 2012, 11:23:27 PM
Yeah I was surprised my AVENGA plate was still there. But I brought that back in like 2000 when personalised plates only cost about $400, they are so expensive now.

I am the same with my '75. People often ask why I don't put my Avenga plates on my '75 but I like my black plates.

And now that you can reregister a car and keep its black plates it makes it even harder to choose personalised plates over the black ones.
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: oldschool on January 31, 2012, 10:42:42 AM
I know if you still have the old black plates for a de-registered car, they can be put back on when it's vinned, but if the old black plates are gone, can replacement ones be made in black or do they have to be white?
Also, can you swap P Plates with black ones while you own a car, so you can use it with the P Plates and then put the black ones back on when you sell it and keep the P Plates for your next Avenger?
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: hunted on January 31, 2012, 11:07:17 AM
You cant get old black plates remade period (in black or white). you would have to get a brand new plate with a new number/letter combination.

and I dont think you can take off a black plate for a P plate then go back to the black. Again, I think you woul have to get a brand new plate.

No, you need to still have the original black plates in good condition to be able to revin it with the old plates under the new rules, they cannot make new black plates and they won't make white plates with the old number (although you may be able to personalise a white plate with the same number, see more below). If your black plates are missing or damaged the will issue you a standard white plate with the modern ABC123 numbering.

Quote from: oldschool on January 31, 2012, 10:42:42 AM

No. When you put personalised plates on a car they make you surrender your old plates and the old rego number is forever dead. for the new rules to work the de-registered car needed to have the black plates as its last set of plates when it was deregistered so once you switch to Personalised plates then your old black ones are dead.

If you sell a car with personalised plates and you want to keep the plates for your next car then you can go down to the post office and apply for a new white number plate to be issued and your Personalised Plate sort of becomes suspended until you register it on something else.

I know all this from experiance from my cars in the past. I did find a way physically keep your black plate but you can never use it again. I did this on my '80 so I still have the original black plates for it.

Here is what I did. First I let the rego lapse so it because de-registered but I didn't have to hand in the original JU2660 black plates.

Then I got it re-vinned with a new white plate AQL516, Then I personallised my plate getting AVENGA and surrendering the AQL516 white plate.

This doesn't help me much because I have no way of getting that black plate back on to the car. If you goto plates.co.nz they say JU2660 is already taken (by my old black plate) I could get JU266O with the letter o on the end instead of a zero and hope nobody notices.

I think the only time you can personalise an old black number is when the LTSA knows they have destoryed the old black plates, which is fair enough or you could have 2 cars driving around with the same plates, 1 legally and 1 not.

I have one of those. It is a must have if you want to do major work on your Avenger. It is like a Haynes manual on crack! It has all the tech drawings of the suspension parts, heaps of other measurements for if you need to straighten or repair the chassis. It goes in to much better detail than the Haynes manual does. I would say it is easily 3 times bigger than a Haynes.

There is an Alpine/GLS on Trademe which is being parted out.

It would be a good source of parts for anyone looking to do a quad headlight conversion etc.

is it bad that I am reasonably interested in this, do you think if I play the "yay I won your whole car for $1 he would sell It LOL
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on July 08, 2013, 12:12:34 PM
haha, don't think that will work, but if you want a part then ask him how much in the questions and then just click the buy now and tell what parts you want.

he said he is open to offers on the whole car. It is up in Hastings so not to far to drive for you, or maybe Aaron or Kiera might be able to pick up some parts for you. do you need anything for your Alpine other than the auto gearbox?

The parts are selling pretty quickly. the current auction is http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/chrysler/other/auction-612789540.htm (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/chrysler/other/auction-612789540.htm)

But that will close when someone uses the buy now so it is best to go to his members listing page and see what the current auction is. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/Listings.aspx?member=51976 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/Listings.aspx?member=51976)

weirdest auction/listing setup EVER

and I thought I made things complicated sometimes

and that is why OS don't allow "offers" saves mucking around/lowballers
Title: Re: Avenger parts on trademe
Post by: avenga on July 08, 2013, 02:33:00 PM
Yeah I don't like making offers on parts, I am always worried about lowballing and offending the seller.

I guess when you have that many parts then it is the easiest way to do it, you can't really make an auction for every part, this way people can just ask for what bits they want.

In the dealership i worked at, all the 1500TC Avenger from Todds we sold, were black interior trimmed. BUT, a customer could at ordering time with dealer, have any colour scheme or trim option, at a slightly higher price as it interupted the std line build of that days production. I remember our dealer principle at the time[a 40 year-old] took a TC off our floor and was invited down to the Levin race track,[ still going in those days,] and blew away MK3 Cortinas from the Ford dealership in town, whom were also invited to this promo. He actually broke the then[ std  up to two litre]  saloon car lap record !

The 1500TC I owned many years ago must have been a special customer order as it had light tan/white trim and brown carpets.

They have been selling them on Trademe for years. I put a set of those in my 1975 back in 2011, just buying another set for my wagon.

Yeah, just got them to quote for one for my wagon, I need to get them modified for the bigger transmission tunnel and firewall, so I'm buying an extra bit of carpet which a local trim shop is going to cut and stitch in, but here are the prices they gave me.

Avenger Floor Carpets                $310
Boot mat (Wagon)                $  80
Carpet per metre                $  50        1800mm wide

This auction is for one rear RH quarter light window for a 1977 - 1981 Chrysler Avenger.

If you own a nice Avenger, then these spares are a must-have, as glass has a habit of getting broken.

You can see in the photos, I have the 4 quarter light windows, front windscreen (or windshield), rear window and drivers door main window. You are welcome to buy the lot, or let me know which one you want and I can start an auction.

All windows are in good condition for their age.

There are also 3 rear window rubber seals which appear to be in surprisingly good condition, and one front windshield rubber in average condition with a little bit of perishing etc. Note there are no expander inserts with these rubbers.

Make me an offer for the lot :)

I am happy to freight the small windows, but not the front and rear windshields and rubbers due to their size and fragility, unless the prospective buyer can offer a good solution, which would be at the buyers risk and cost.

worth getting ion contact I reckon just for the Rubbers

i just fitted one of those autodec carpets to my orange car they don't fit great in fact they fit badly, but better than nothing i found mine was to big around the tunnel anyway richard so test fit yours first before you get it made bigger.
bit of trimming and pulling needed and its still a bit baggy around tunnel which is a pain.

The autodec one for my 75 was baggy around the tunnel also, so maybe it would fit.

That?s Kevin?s engine. I?ve seen it in person and it?s a very pretty 1300, he replaced it with a 1600. I?ve been on a few cruises with Kevin when she had this 1300 in his Avenger and it went really well. He is a member here

Hi Guys and apologies for the slow reply - work has been overwhelming. The ol girl has dropped a cylinder - Had the head done in 2019 but still fires short one cylinder so have stripped it back down again. Back in the day Dad used to get gaskets over the counter but thats not the case these days - how time has marched on. I haven't pulled the piston assembly yet and wasn't exactly looking for another project - got enough of those on my own cars let alone fixing and repairing the mileage my brothers took out of the ol girl over the years. Its definitely not a spark issue and the compression test shows no.1 cylinder lucky to get to 60 psi so something definitely going on. The saving grace is I made found enough space in my garage to get her undercover however Mothers car is now sitting outside and I am getting the odd sideways glance at my (lack of) speed in getting the yellow beast up and running again

QuoteHillman Avenger parts for a car I no longer own…
Closes: 2 hrs 55 mins
Thu 4 Aug, 12:13 pm
Description
The deeper you dig, the more you find…..
I had great plans for my Avengers but moved on many years ago.
So this time we have:
1: Brand new Avenger boot lock complete.
2: a brand new pinion for a LucaS M 35J starter motor plus one other in good condition.
3: Two brand new brush assembly’s for a Lucas M 35 J starter motor.
4: I think a brand new bearing for a manual gearbox, had to have the groove specially machined to the outside.
5: A crankcase breather unit- not sure if strictly for an Avenger but brand new.
6: a clutch arm and a clutch release bearing, not new.
7: a fan switch- not new.
8: a few other bits Avenger related.
WYSIWYG.

Yes I'm bidding : no I don't need anything & wont go much higher

Henry won that auction.

Usually if I know who the other person bidding on an auction is I will email them so I don't go in to a bidding war with another forum member.

There was another parts lot last week that went for like $127

Nice! btw. I have ton of old hillman rear lights that I have collected over the years.

I have bought a few bulk loads of parts and they always seem to include tail lights. The tail lights on my 75 are NOS, and all my other Avengers are Chrysler wagons, so if anyone ever needs tail lights then let me know

Happy new year everyone. Please read the description before messaging. Recently I rebuilt a 1975 hilman avenger. To achieve this I purchased a donor car. The shell was sent to scrap after I got the front off it and now I have a lot of misc parts left over. Including a spare engine in unknown condition. A lot of good parts and some in poor condition. I would like to offer these on for free with the condition that all parts are taken. I?m located in Kamo Whangarei

Part #'s 2 5 and 3 etc are still relevant to Avenger ?
