Title: Speedo cable wanted, 1975 manual 1300cc
Post by: Jodi on May 18, 2023, 10:04:20 PM
Hi, I'm trying to source a new speedo cable, I went to Parrots to see if I could get mine 'rebuilt' but the plastic casing at the dash end they cant replace.  Does anyone know where I could source a whole new unit please?  (I can find alot of just the cables, but need the end fittings as well).  Thank you :)

I'll bite : what's Parrots? or where in the World are you?

I made the mistake back in 97 or 98 of swapping Door hinges and not being brave enough to unplug the speedo after unbolting the dash

anyway the tension snapped it and I managed to buy new then

anywho enough old-man stories I'm still reasonably sure they are available new or NOS

Hi, thanks for your reply.   I'm in North Canterbury, Parrots is an instrument specialist in Christchurch https://www.eparrott.co.nz/ (https://www.eparrott.co.nz/)   (highly recommend for anything instrument related, very old school and knowledgeable!)
I've done a bunch of googling but can't seem to find anywhere that has the end connections on the cable, do you have any suggestions?  Thanks  :)

Speaking of speedo cables.

I just went to visit a guy in Morrinsville who had a whole bunch of old Todd motors spare parts.

He did have some NOS speedo cables. I picked up one for my later model Chrysler Avenger. He did have some others but the connectors were different. Can you post a picture of what the dash end of your cable looks like?

I checked through my spare parts and I only have later model Chrysler Avenger ones. I checked on one of my spare Hillman dashboards and the connector on the late model ones are completely different so none of my cables would work for you. I also checked and all of the other NOS cables from that place I visited on Saturday were the screw in at both end type (I think used by Hunters and later Talbot Sunbeams etc)

Best place to try is our parts guy Graeme Ekins. His number is 021 147 1114

Failing that you could try Bruce Ardell at Mechanical Restorations 06 3427713

Or Butler Auto Mart, they don't list an Avenger speedo cable but they do stock a lot of Avenger parts so they might have something laying around https://www.butlerautomart.co.nz/search.aspx?S=speedo (https://www.butlerautomart.co.nz/search.aspx?S=speedo)

Just make sure that when you ask, make sure it's for an earlier Hillman Avenger, not the later Chrysler Avenger as they are different.

Try Ebay UK, I got mine from there.
