Good Morning
I am having a few issues with my father in laws hillman avenger 1600 engine, it revs up to 4000rpm and then loses all power and wont rev any more while driving down the road.
i have been playing with the height of the needle and it doesn't make too much difference, with the carbs set as rich as possible it gets to 4500rpm before dying, it feels like it runs out of gas in the bowls at these sorts of rev's............. but i am not sure if thats happening or not
the engine is a fresh rebuild
twin stromberg carbs have been overhauled and float levels and needles are correct according to the manual
timing and advance is all good
fuel pump is a Fuelflow electric pump and is working correct
but i just can't seem to work out what is going on and my best mate who is a mechanic is struggling to think of things to try
if anybody has had this before of thinks of things i could try i would appreciate anything!!!!
any advice would be greatly appreciated
thanks Jesse
Checked the oil in the Carbs? could be spark (points?
Make sure you have a nice thin oil in the dashpots, could also be your coil breaking down and not allowing enough spark, this will get worse as the engine warms up aswell
yes i have been using the correct penrite carb oil and brand new gt40 bosch coil and new leads, plugs, points, condensor, cap and rotor.........................
heh oops I just jammed engine oil in my carbs LOL they were bone dry so an improvement haha, might try some air-comrpessor oil next
I've found the best oils for them are 3 in 1 oil or auto trans oil. Try a different coil if you have one spare, I've had a similar problem with a brand new one not reving past 3000
Check the wires in the distributor, I had a high speed misfire which I finally found a badly frayed wire with only a couple of strands left....
thanks everybody for their help and advice
i put some a pair of twin dellorto's on this thing in the weekend and it FIXED all the revving problems....... which frustrates me as i want it to run quietly and be as economical as possible
but at least now he can drive it
so it must be the float level of the needle size, at some stage in the future i will look at getting bigger needles for it and trying them but for now its onto fixing all the other problems so it's a bit more reliable and nicer to drive
thanks
