It bolts in to the cross member like in the attached photos from the workshop manual.

They did make a quick rack for the rally Avengers but they are super super rare, as in made of unobtainium. I always wanted one for my old rally car but could never find one. I know a couple of NZ rally cars that have one but yeah, really rare.

thanks for that mate...
so i need to find the other bracket bits (for the none steering shaft side.)
any idea if you can get solid mount for it like you can with the escort?
and any idea if the racks are the same as the talbot sunbeam?

The whole front half of the Talbot sunbeam is the same as an Avenger so I am sure they use the same rack.

You can get these solid mounts from the UK, not to sure of anywhere in new Zealand though. http://www.montgomery-motorsport.co.uk/steering/talbot-sunbeam-avenger-alloy-steering-rack-strengthener.html (http://www.montgomery-motorsport.co.uk/steering/talbot-sunbeam-avenger-alloy-steering-rack-strengthener.html)

thanks for the help guys.

so if they are the same does that mean i can use the quick rack kit from the sunbeam?

Yeah, you should be able to. There are a couple of people on here with Sunbeams who could probably confirm 100% but as far as I am aware they are the same and compatible

I bought a quick rack about four years ago along with the solid mount. There are two types of racks used in the Avenger and the quick-rack will only fit one type but I no longer remember how to tell the difference.

That is probably for the Hillman/Chrysler. Because the Chrysler?s have a inch wider front track than the Hillmans so maybe they had to change the steering rack for the wider track

My manual does say there was 2 manufactures. Cam Gears and Burman.

It says they are interchangeable as a complete unit, but the individual components inside the rack are not compatible. This is in an early Hillman workshop manual so I will see if any of my manuals cover the later Chryslers

It is the Burman rack that you need, when they made the lower control arms longer in later models, they just made the tie rods half inch longer each side (same rack)
Quick-rack was not cheap with freight and then customs taxed me

Looking in my manuals and parts book the 1970-72 Cam Gears rack had a 5 tooth pinion. The 1973+ Burman rack had a 6 tooth pinion and a 1" wide tube. The Cam Gears rack was narrower hence the mounts not being interchangeable.

I've been asked about 4x in the last month for spares

and I am being selfish with mine (as I don't intend to be kind to them once I get something motivated once again)

what's the weak point?

or what can be done to upgrade them if in anyway?

I have never had an issue with any of my racks, and you know I drive both my Avengers a lot and do track days in both, so I'd be interested to see what is failing for others

WOF failures are often the left side rack nylon bush which is not replaceable. Easy to fix the knocking by fitting an exhaust clamp around it to take up the play! :-)

"Inner Rack ends"

what are people doing for these in 2025?

I hear of a broken one stopping a car from returning to the road

I'm not even sure which "bit" hat is either & I'm hoping I never need to sort it myself as I understand they are NLA (No Longer Available)

Part #5?

edit : it the end of #5 that's failed :

I am unsure of compatibility at this stage

for now Panic is over, but still seeking options for the Avenger Community (eg : I don't think this is a worry or Consumable)
