Avengers you used to own

Here is a few of the Avengers I have owned over the years. Tell us some details of your long lost Avengers.

This was going to be the new body shell for my 3S-GE powered Avenger race car. I brought it for $36 off Trademe and sold it for $400 a few years later.

This was my Avenger wagon. I brought it for $125 off Trademe and totally stripped it for parts. It's diff is in my race car, so is the headlights, engine and gearbox. I used the front guard and door of this to repair my car after it's crash. I still have the rest of the doors, other front guard, rear seat and front glass from this car in my garage. It was actually quite a nice wagon and culd have probably been saved but it wasn't running when I got it and I needed the parts to rebuild my crashed race car.

that estate looked pretty tidy  :(

It was pretty tidy and I should have saved it. I feel really guilty now about wreaking the Avengers I did back in the day. The Wagon did have a big list of faults like the electrics and the engine was stuffed but the body was good.

But without that Wagon I couldn't get my race car back on the track so the Wagon did die for a worthy cause. I do often think about that Wagon and how I really should have kept it. I always wanted to do up a Wagon but now I have too many cars to start a new project.

Gee wish I had taken pic's of all the Avengers I've had

My list starts with a  1980 1.6GLS paid $1200, Had a White 78 Avenger van(no back seats,no winding windows on rear doors)was owned new by Lucas NZ, got that for $100

then my 1.3GL, then got my 1300, got given a 79 wagon and used the 1600 engine in my GL,later replaced it with a Alpine 1600

Had a Orange 76 alpine which was only good for parts

a Kipchat(bronze) 79 GLS  and a Neptune Blue 80 GLS both only for parts, and then got given dads work wagen a Neptune Blue 78 1600LS which i was going to do up but then ended up selling it to a guy in Hamilton

Mmmm be great if I still had them ALL

Oh my god you had a van!! I have always wanted to see a van. I have heard about them and one of my old sales brochures had the price for one writen on it but I have never seen one, not even a photo of one.

That is a huge collection you have owned.

I was really bad at taking photos also. I had 2 or 3 other Avengers, all 79-80. They were really bad with rust everywhere. I only brought the cars that were to bad to save just so I could strip parts of on them for the race car. The most I ever paid for one of those is $100. They we well past the point of saving so I didn't bother taking photos. funny thing is all of the Avenger I have owned except my '75 have been red 79-80 Chrysler Avengers (easy to swap body panels with the race car)

I got a donor car when I brought my '75. it was a white '75 but I didn't have room for it so I gave it to a friend.

From what I have read the van only came out in NZ.

According to wikipedia

Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillman_Avenger#New_ZealandAn unusual variant unique to New Zealand, available for some years, was a 'van', basically the manual Avenger wagon with a flat rear floor in place of rear seats and fixed, rather than wind-down, rear door windows. This, and rival models, was introduced around 1975 to get around strict post-oil crisis government hire purchase laws in the country that required a 60% deposit for a new car with only 12-month terms versus 25% and three years for a 'light commercial vehicle' which is what these so-called 'vans' were classified as.

This was my first Avenger, quite a tidy 1600 Auto with only 100,000km on it, wonder if it sold??

Yeah that's my driving style Andrew...You've heard I left Richard behind in our gravel rally yesterday?!

avenga

Yeah man, Scarlett is a little dirt devil. I was having trouble getting grip with the big fat tyres and too much power. Kept on wanting to step out too much around the corners but it was heaps of fun having a hoon on the gravel roads.

For those who didn't know Ross and I (Team Avenger) came 2nd in the Sunbeam Car Club "Bent Rod" scatter rally. I let Ross keep the plaque for his excellent job of navigating and leading the way.

I will write up a full post about it when I get a chance.
