Title: Avenger Youtube videos
Post by: avenga on January 19, 2011, 11:04:27 AM
I thought I should start a thread for videos of Avengers from Youtube or other sites.

Some good old video of racing Avengers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aA-4giyQ3k (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aA-4giyQ3k)

1971 Chrysler-Plymouth Cricket Commercial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbeJ9TJirLU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbeJ9TJirLU)

Another old commercial with really bad sound but you can see the Avenger/Cricket being made.

Here is a little video of my 1975 starting up. I was planning to do a longer video but my camera ran out of batteries.

This will give you guys a little taste of what it sounds like, it sounds better in real life but this will give you some idea. I will post some more videos later.

It doesn't matter what it looks like now. I have found it is really good having a project thread because not only do you get incouragement for all the other members you also get to look back and see how far you have came.

Thanks. I love how mine sounds and goes out on the road. My mechanic does awesome work on my car. It is pretty quick now and it is a very fun car to drive.

I saw that when it was on the tele a while back but I was wondering something.

That show is set in 1973, and the Avenger Estate was released in March 1972 so at most that Avenger Estate would be a year old if not brand new when the show was set. But when you look at it it is pretty rough with the back rubber strip missing and damaged paint. So I wonder in 1973 would you 1. Use a brand new car for a car bomb? 2. would a car look that run down after only 1 year?
Title: Re: Avenger Youtube videos
Post by: oldschool on February 27, 2011, 01:55:27 AM
Yes, I thought that wagon should have looked much newer too...lol
Both the Mk3 Cortina and Avenger wagon had "K" rego plates, which ran from Aug 1971 to July 1972.
The show was widely bagged for inaccuracies, the main one being the MK3 Cortina which was supposed to be a 1971/72 TC 2000 GXL, but was in fact a later model TD 2000 E with GXL badges!

I was surprised to see Austin Allegro's in a 1973 TV show as we didn't see them here until 1975. They were released in May 1973 in the UK with the quartic (squarish) steering wheel (as seen in the show) but soon replaced in 1974 with a normal one. The "L" rego one used in the show was spewing blue smoke, so had obviously had a hard life in its few months in the force...haha

Did you ever watch the USA version of Life on mars? It was pretty good. He drives a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle instead of the Mk3 Cortina.

Have you seen http://www.imcdb.org (http://www.imcdb.org)? it is the Internet Movie Car Database. It tries to list all the movies or TV shows cars have been in.

It has some Avengers on the site but most are background cars but here is the pages for Hillman Avengers (http://www.imcdb.org/vehicles.php?make=Hillman&model=Avenger&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on) (29 movies) Plymouth Cricket (http://www.imcdb.org/vehicles.php?make=Plymouth&model=Cricket&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on) (7 movies) and Chrysler Avenger (http://www.imcdb.org/vehicles.php?make=Chrysler&model=Avenger&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on) (8 movies)

Here the pharmacist with unhealthy plans for his wife drives an Avenger, he has some mirrors on it, even dazzled the camera. This looks like the very early 1980's and the Beta system colour cameras they used then caught a lot of glare. I wonder did they shoot the scene where he pulls up by his house a few times? Mind you I don't think the side view mirror set up on that Avenger would be a good idea!

That Avenger Estate is the same burgundy colour as my Super too!!
How about that Imp..is that purple of blue???
1976 was their last year wasn't it Paddy?
Imps seem to be worth more than Avengers, is that because there's hardly any good ones left??!!

September 1976 Linwood started churning out the MK2. As far as I know the MK1 was still in limited production at Ryton as they ironed out the Chrysler Alpine (Simca based thing - crud) new production problems, so there were a few 1977 Hillman Avengers. Of course all Avenger fans wish that they kept the Hillman shape in production and left the late '70s styling to the Sunbeam.

The Imp was the car that bankrupted Rootes, the warranty cost was insane. I've been told by the mechanics of old that ''..it was well named for it was one Imp alright..'' they had mad overheating, clutch and transmission problems. All alloy OHC, high compression engine - bear in mind this was in the early 1960's!
If you managed to keep one running right they were very good on fuel though.

Anyhow like the light blue 1300DL currently on ebay the GB 'R' registration (01/Aug 1976 - 30/July 1977) would be the youngest Hillman Avenger you could find.

I see the MK2 got the half vinyl roof too! I wonder were the Specials running out the stocks of points distributors and link-bar throttles, and drum brakes on the 1300cc's also no doubt!

That's a lot of TV time for an Avenger in the 1970's...and it wasn't pranged either!
Chrysler could have used the show to sell them...as recommended by a Scarecrow!
Going by the badging it's a 1973 1250 or 1500 wagon....maybe a 1500 to handle the extra drag caused by the appendage on the roof...LMAO
Title: Re: Avenger Youtube videos
Post by: Paddy75 on July 29, 2012, 09:53:09 PM
Ahh right enough, its a blue-badge pre Oct73 1250/1500 I couldn't see if the grille badge was round or square and by the sound of the starter its a bendix drive reel.
Hmm some of that carburettor potion the Crowman had was some job! There have been a few times I would have liked to batter the Stromberg with a shifter spanner too.
Must HDMI that into the TV in the sitting room and see what the nephew thinks of the show.

I was at a local vintage show yesterday and there were a lot of Rootes Group cars, Humber Hawk, couple of Singer Gazelles, Vogues (the expensive SuperMinx) a lovely wee Hillman Imp, Minx and a convertible SuperMinx. The SuperMinx got a lot of attention ''..that yoke needs an 8-track player with Jim Reeves or Patsy Cline..''

You could see that the old Hillmans and Singers were a fair bit ahead of a BMC or Ford of the time and there was a guy with his Landcrab, a Wolsley Six (the Allegro engine with two more pots) who has several of them - yes he was insane!
Another lad had a Metro (laughter) and the 1100/1300's were more loved so it was not all ridicule for the BMC/Leyland camp. There was a Maxi for sale and it being an automatic I'd guess a lot of people would shudder at the thought of what will go wrong with that!

The Avenger got a lot of happy comments again I heard ''...they were a good driving car..'' as I said before, just how, why and WTF how come so many Marinas were sold? Was a gun used or something?
I identified a set of Avenger wagon tail lights for a guy with a parts stall and a strip Avenger speedo which he thought was for some type of Vauxhall.

A few MK2 Escorts, hey there were fun to drive even though the owners tend to have the same personality - none. There was a MK1 Granada and boy but were they a big cart!

Funnily enough the Avenger and a 2-door Viva got more looks than a Bentley! I'm kinda getting intrested in Imps the man with the green one said ''..you get 50mpg on a bad day out of it..'' and they look like a lot of fun to drive. Anyhow one old car is more than enough for now folks!

Its a wonder why Top-Gear haven't copped-on to that clip. The driver goes over the Dukes of Hazard yump slow then after feeling the Avenger landing on all-fours right goes at it harder. Yep, the very car for Irish driving.
The General Lee-boy.
Thats a great clip and Dan Findy has the very yoke...
Dan! Your 1500 DL is, and could be, a legend. Go for it lad! There is that reason the Avenger became so popular in Ireland (N&S) at the time - then made in Dublin too - Garda car! The shade of blue on your 1970 is like the fuzz wagons!

That was a "Cheater" car imported and converted for r+d and reviews such as this; notice the stuck on side reflectors, Canadian Colt Spec Cricket emblems. This car had the Tiger wheels, wing and stripes along with the hood bulge. (and loud exhaust)
'73 is the only year of the huge bumper protectors, and those were tacked on as well.
I just dug up my Dealers sale Pack; I need to unstick the pages and I will scan and post them here
Title: Re: Avenger Youtube videos
Post by: Paddy75 on December 01, 2012, 01:16:07 AM
Thanks Mikey I must try to post the brochures I have. A standard Cricket looks like a 1970-3 Avenger (UK&Irl) Super (NZ standard) with the four round headlights the GL & GT/GLS had. I believe the Federal motor agency had not approved square headlights so the standard Cricket got the Avenger GL front.
So the Cricket was round lights, square clocks. When older people ask about my Avenger often its, ''..oh square lights, is that a strip or round speedo?..''
The longer stroked, post Oct'73 Avenger at Super trim level got the GL dashboard. The the last six months of MK1 production the Super also got the GL headlights, so a 1976 Super looks like a GL.

Cars made for the Scandanavian countries had the US side markers fitted also. I see in the round clock cluster there is an unused 'Brake' red warning lamp which was apparently for the Scandanavian spec - dual circuit brakes with pressure diffrential warning. Still today you see Volovo's with side marker lights. For some reason not on Saab's. Anyhow, yadeyadeda.

I'll try to figure how to post pics on this site.

Ours were the highback buckets, strip speedo, side markers (though not the same as mine), round headlights, tail lenses were all red because amber had not been approved for use on the rear yet.
Engine was the low compression small valve 1500 single or dual cdse carbs. We had the brake warning light (required) all of them had opening vent windows
Title: Re: Avenger Youtube videos
Post by: oldschool on December 01, 2012, 10:00:03 AM
Yes I noticed that unused 'Brake' warning light on the r/h side of my Alpine (GLS) dash and will hook it up to a plunger on my hand brake lever to get a hand brake warning light...one of the most useful idiot lights to have...lol
Not even fitted in the later Chrysler Avenger...while they had a brake system warning light, still no hand brake warning light!
In my Fiat 126 the brake system warning light and hand brake warning light are in the same circuit, simple really.

Late model Chryslers had a hand brake warning light, next to choke light on 6 dial dash, prob only GL/GLS range
Title: Re: Avenger Youtube videos
Post by: oldschool on December 01, 2012, 10:37:20 AM
Cool...Yes only on the 6 dial dash according to my manual. My light or hand brake switch must be broken. The switch is a bit hard to get at, as the vinyl lever cover sits under the carpet and is glued to the tunnel...save that job for when I've got nothing else to do...haha

That was interesting Paddy, didn't know Avengers have a special thermostat...maybe they were prone to overheating in the States with the aircon going all the time?!
They do run better with a 77 deg one though.
And we all better heed that warning not to drive around without rear shocks, otherwise the springs will fall out...LMAO

Hahaha yeh, I guess people didn't have to think about a dislocated spring! with leaf springs!

I thought the fear of the front calipers ''..you need to consult the manual..'' and the carbie being ''..a real gem..'' then the explanation of how a CD 'buretter works was a bit funny.

Seriously though a trailing link axle can catch you out if you are changing a shocker, that spring coming out at you like an angry snake, not good! I was thinking about that when it comes to pulling the axle (4.4 diff) out of the field-find.

I put the C&T Cricket GT video on youtube but it didn't upload so well.

Yeah leaf springs only dislocate when the u bolts break...haha
That guy seemed to be afraid of the disc brakes?!
In 1971 most Yank Tanks were still drum brakes all round, so mechanics didn't know how to change pads and had to consult the manual...lol
The Avenger must have the easiest brake pads to change EVER...hardly need any tools, just a pair of pliers!
Not like my mates Opel Astra, I had to use a special 10mm hex socket to undo the calipers, then use another special 7mm hex socket to undo the sliders...before I could finally change the pads...what a pain in the arse!!

Ohh disc brakes, what a dream!
My 1300 has a very special advanced braking system where if you go through a big puddle the front brakes on the ditch side magically vastly reduce the friction, so the next time you brake there is all bite on the drivers side and little bite on the passingers.

This system is designed to pull you into the middle of the road to avoid any more water! Keeps the car clean you see.

Yeh and brake linings these days are crap they just don't last. I've got three pars of the yellow asbesdos shoes and a set of wheel cylinders that were going for next to nothing on the 'bay.

You were lucky with the Astra, I seen a cousin replacing the pads on the rear of a 2008 VW Passat wagon, required the computer to reset the calipers, because of the electronic handbrake!
Oh and ?350 for ONE new caliper.
The computer requires ?600 spent on it at least once a year to keep it up to date! Scam!

Motor manufacturers will not be happy untill they have enslaved us all. The fookers want us all leasing cars from them so they have a great whack of your income guranteed.

I'm starting to think my Shitroen Xsara 1.9D is maybe worth preserving as its as far as you'd want to go before you get into too many electronics. Has ABS, but you don't need to reset the brake computer, mechanical injectors (diesel) so bad quality (ahem!) diesel won't cause 1,000's of damage, no floating flywheel - those things are guranteed trouble, and no turbo so I can do 80-90mph on the motorways and still getting around 47mpg.

Honestly the Pug 309 D (some were made in the Avenger factory at Ryton funnily enough) really seems like a wonderfull car now compared to the expense everybody seems to be getting into these days.

Oh but your new car is only 35 quid a year to tax! Ohh just wait untill...

Anyhow folks this is a funny, almost innocent clip we are on about, its worth a watch. Hey! that next car was the Colt that the dealers dissed the Cricket for! Tractor steering and as tinny as a bean can!

The wee Chrysler man! Hohoho, innocent times indeedy.

A Polara is a 2-door I guess the Dodge 1500 was the 4-door? Well sure all the names associated with Avengers is a bit nuts.

Was on Ebay for ?1 and badly listed so ...

Just need a Chrysler badge to complete the set, naahhh!!! - Here Chrysler means a leaf sprung people-carrier with the re-sale value and desirability of scrap iron! Yes yes Chrysler Avenger or Sunbeam is very different response of course.

There is a possibility that I'll end up with a MK2 sooner or later, well make that a probability, and I notice the front badge often missing so its a good keep.

Yep that's for sure! I wonder was the imperial (cherry) red one a drum-braked 1300!

That clip was part of a news report about a slump in new car sales in 1974/5 so the compound of Avengers there would have been sold off on the cheap too! Well, once the truck-drivers came off strike.

Just to complete the fantacy, imagine if a five gallon drum of red-lead paint had fallen into the primer mix! Oh, and there was an explosion of Waxoil on the assembly track just before the bodies hit the paint section!

C'mon Jared you weren't sucked in by that Hunter video were you?! Obviously the car won't be going 200 km/h at 5000 rpm...more like 130 km/h...LMAO
Yours was reading 200 km/h at 7000 rpm which is about right...of course any old bucket of bolts will go 200 km/h up on stands!
