Should look pretty cool with the big mags on it.

I would say $3K is a fair insurance value to put on it. I always see the insurance value as the cost to replace, not necessarily the value of the car itself. So if you did write off that Alpine and you had to go out and buy another Alpine to replace it I would expect you would have to pay at least $3K to find another one. Alpine/GLS are a pretty rare and desirable model now

Personally I think the price you paid for your Alpine was really good, usually Alpines are worth more than a normal Hillman Avenger and I have seen wreaked Alpines go for $600-700. by the time you clean it up and fix up the little issues it has then it will be a really nice car.

Good buying!!

3k is too low, have my Alpines insured with AA for 4k each. As Richard said it's the replacement cost that's important.
Also if the sum is too low, it'll be written off rather than repaired if pranged.

Haha, Those wheels are crack up :P

Maybe it is just the light but I lol'd pretty hard at them. They so don't suit the car but as you said "haters gunna hate"

Rest of the car looks awesome.

I have heaps of spare parts for the Alpine cluster if you need it.

I even have a fully restored set of gauges that set me back over $600 which I am not even going to use.

will sort things out slowly, I believe the handbrake was stuck on as the mount bolt had been pulled through the floor/grinding noise

awesome

when fitting rims left rear wheel stayed on the ground (jack at full height) something not right/spring fell out

adjuster for mirror is gone/broken :/

did i Mention the diff whine? (was warned about these things so not unhappy :P

tally is yet to click OVER 1k so extra happy!

when fitting rims left rear wheel stayed on the ground (jack at full height) something not right/spring fell out

Sounds like the shock to me. May be it isn't bolted in at the top or it is buggered.

adjuster for mirror is gone/broken :/

They use the same adjuster as the mirror in a Valiant like my Charger. (be warned Valiant parts prices are stupidly expensive)

is way down my list currently : budget is nill and not quite a requirement

thinking about jammign the Solex's I have and the spare cam : couldn't hurt right?

aware this is a reasonably tired old engine BUT dont have another K for a rebuild just yet : will have to wait till at least summer
Title: Re: JoKer's '76 HN6783 Discussion
Post by: avenga on June 06, 2012, 10:11:28 AM
Would be good to see how the Solex's run.

BTW my '80 Avenger is AR paint code also. I like the think it stands for "Avenger Red" but there was a Valiant colour called "Amarante Red" so it is probably that.

yea had the Solexs on last motor before your carbs so I know they aint bad

The Alpine already has a warm cam, so no worries.
Take off the oil filler cap and look inside the rocker cover with a torch to see if it has double valve springs?
That will confirm if it still has its original Alpine motor, done 180,000 kms according to carjam.

All twin carb Alpines had a twin choke cable, so not too rare.
Those Solex/Dellorto/Weber carbs take a lot of setting up...choke sizes, jets, linkage etc and drink fuel like there's no tomorrow...ask Richard!
The Alpine motor in my super just has a single 1.50 CD like yours had and runs great...still noticeably more powerful than a standard super and very economical too.
Talking with Mal at Bygone Autos, it's all about intake air speed with Avengers...a single carb provides a high intake speed at low rpm = torquey...which is what you want with an auto tranny to get it into top gear ASAP.
Twin carbs aren't as torquey down low and the motor has to be revved to get the intake air speed up, so more useful for top end power.

Title: Re: JoKer's '76 HN6783 Discussion
Post by: avenga on June 08, 2012, 02:30:23 PM
Yeah Solex/Dellorto/Weber carbs are a mission to setup. You really need a dyno with a whole bunch of different jets and chokes to try getting it right.

Yup, Intake air speed is the key. That is why I went down from 36mm venturi down to 32mm. Made heaps of difference but as Ross said, twins are more for mid-top end

not in a million years : unless it breaks

trying to stay OEM with this one as much as possible

"investment" plus I reckon I am little eccentric, kinda loving the hate for the mags currently LOL tire rub may deal to 1 tire pretty shortly so will fix that for a while till at least I wear some more tyres off the Subaru

Looking good.

I use 98 in mine. I don't need valvemaster because I got hardened valve seats put in when I rebuilt my engine.
Title: Re: JoKer's '76 HN6783 Discussion
Post by: oldschool on June 14, 2012, 11:15:44 PM
Standard Avengers were made for 95+ octane leaded fuel but will run on 91 okay if the timing is backed off a little, 10 deg against 15 deg using premium.
Logan runs 91 in his auto no problem and it doesn't have a vacuum advance dizzy either, same as an Alpine.
I put Valvemaster in the carb damper rather than in the gas tank, plus check the valve clearances once a year to keep on top of any valve seat recession.

ive come to the darside and sepite being abroke student, run 98 in mine. It is far more economical. i prpbably havnt put 91 in it for about a year, and im pretty sure it doesnt hate me. its still going afterall!

Heater switch on the right and cigarette light on the left. They are on a little mounting plate.

I am looking for one for my Alpine dashboard.

fan switch is near key, last venger I had I installed "accessory" port just above it in blank spot

I remember now there was nothing there on my 78
Title: Re: JoKer's '76 HN6783 Discussion
Post by: oldschool on June 23, 2012, 12:07:07 AM
Yeah, the fan switch is near the key in the Super. On the Alpine they moved it up to beside the radio and put a plastic blanking plate where it used to be. My 74 Alpine never had a stereo and still has the one piece plastic panel for the cigarette lighter/accessory port, stereo and fan switch. The panel only has a skinny cut out for the old style stereo cassette with 2 knobs. To fit a modern CD player the panel has to be cut up, so you're left with a square hole each side of the CD player for the ciggie lighter and fan switch. Easy to fashion a square piece of plastic or aluminum to hold them.

9km per litre is pretty good for a twin carb auto Alpine, my super manual with a single carb Alpine motor does 11km per litre.

yeah it is pretty lame trying to decline a claim because of a 12+ year old photo.

I found it by just google image searching 'Hillman Avenger Crash' It was halfway down the 2nd page of images. My crashed Avenger was on the first page :P

Here is a link to the Oldschool post http://www.oldschool.co.nz/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27632&start=60 it is near the bottom of that page.

Title: Re: JoKer's '76 HN6783 Discussion
Post by: avenga on July 11, 2012, 07:05:10 PM
Yup, that is the middle bit with the cigarette lighter. But it looks like there is a big box that goes around the heater and stereo, the supers never had that and I may need one for my conversion. Are you able to acquire the one off that Alpine for me?

That dash cluster looks really different also. they are different fuel/oil/temp/battery guages and they are on the wrong sides. Normally its fuel/battery on the left and oil/temp on the right, on that cluster they are opposite.
Title: Re: JoKer's '76 HN6783 Discussion
Post by: oldschool on July 11, 2012, 07:32:57 PM
Yeah that cluster is different...I see it has an MPH speedo, so probably a 1500 Alpine...they may have had different gauges to the 1600?

Post by: JoKer on July 11, 2012, 07:44:46 PM
it looks like there is a big box that goes around the heater and stereo

is just a plastic panel, nothing fancy, but yea gauge did intrigue me, moister inside even more

relay huh, only if I have to, I'd rather be procrastinating!
Title: Re: JoKer's '76 HN6783 Discussion
Post by: avenga on July 11, 2012, 08:55:22 PM
It is the bit highlighted in red that I am interested in. The Super doesn't have anything there for me to mount my stereo to. So if I can get a hold of one of those boxes that screw to the frame then that would save me a lot of time fabricating something.

Then I can just make a pretty cover to cover the front.

Yup, I knew that was HN :P was just easier to show you the bit I need on HN. The blue one should have one under its dashboard. If you just unscrew the little cover with the cigarette lighter on it you should be able to see if it has the same stereo holder box thingy.

Because I I bought wheel rims Cesam, but I dared mettres not to kill my silentblocs which are already very dead!!

OK, because I I have wheel rims in 13 X 5,5 " and a horsemanship of tire in 185/70/13 and sometimes held by road is fuzzy and the car looks for the road, so that the precision is better it is necessary to me to inflate my tires in 2,7 bar of pressure.

HAH there's not much floor left & the vinyl roof appears to have eaten the tin top, could be better convertible Flintstones mobile?

What spark plugs are you using, should be Champion N7YC or equivalent for normal use, N6YC for racing.

I once had my Rally car dyno'ed and they changed plugs to N9Y. The centres of several plugs melted and 1 exhaust valve burn out on the next event....

Overheating from bad plugs, timing could lead to Head Gasket problems?

Not sure tbh, what ever was in it when I bought it, Graham is out of stock & I'm still kicking myself, my theory if the points burning out and causing missing and back firing holds up right? Basically self inflicted damage...

had the bits for ages (even multiples of them in my spare cars) not being able to get spare points as simple as I'd liked was starting to worry me, especially when the car wouldnt start last week & that appeared to be the sole issue (felt like not fuel to me initially
